Question about rock hard stomach?

I'm 36 weeks and for the past three days my stomach has been rock hard, like SOLID, all day. I've been staying hydrated and I'm not working anymore, so I'm definitely not "overdoing" it by any means. I'm becoming a bit concerned because I'm assuming it's Braxton Hicks, but aren't too many Braxton Hicks a bad thing, especially if they're unprovoked (meaning I'm not causing them with dehydration or over doing it physically)?

I've read it can put baby in distress and that worries me... However, I'm not bleeding or in pain by any means and baby is still moving a decent amount. Anyone have any advice for this FTM? I see my doctor Wednesday morning.

Re: Question about rock hard stomach?

  • It does sound like BH. Is it really rock solid all day long? That does sound unusual based on my experience, but doesn't mean it is. When my stomach gets really solid like that, I take a few slow deep breaths in and out and it seems to help it pass. Maybe try that. And obvi tell your doctor Wednesday.

  • My belly is almost always completely solid and I still haven't had any known contractions, my doctor hasn't seemed worried
  • @kmcshane0211 It's hard like a rock probably 80-90% of the entire day. It's actually pretty uncomfortable! When I wake up in the morning it's normal feeling, but within an hour of waking up it becomes rock solid, for seemingly no reason, and stays that way for hours and hours with no relief I can notice. I'll definitely talk to my doctor on Wednesday and let you guys know what she says... I might even call tomorrow morning just to be safe.
  • @chelseajeanene thanks for your response! My stomach has been hard on and off my entire pregnancy too. And I haven't noticed any Braxton Hicks at all either. It's just these past couple of days it's been irregularly hard for an irregularly long period of time, every day. I'm just assuming the hardness to be Braxton Hicks, but it's pretty constant, so I'm not sure what to think. It just concerns me a little..
  • Mine is like this too!  I'm pretty sure it's Braxton Hicks.  I chug water but it doesn't let up much.  I go to the doc tomorrow.  I'll write back :)
  • Mine has been really hard for several months. No contractions.

Please do! :) I'm glad I'm not the only one lol. Hopefully it's totally normal.
  • Mine gets like this constantly!! Usually it's because I'm bloated
  • I have been having the same issue!! It is constant and not really "painful", but uncomfortable. It almost feels like I'm tensing up my stomach muscles - but I'm not, at least not consciously. I've tried to relax my stomach muscles, but no luck. Today, I did get **some** relief from chugging water (like a liter within ten minutes) and laying on my left side, so maybe it's related to hydration?? I don't know...please keep me posted on what you find out!
  • @bnwillia3 Yes exactlyyyy!! That is exactly what I'm dealing with too. I'll definitely let you guys know if I find out anything else about it.
  • I went to my Dr for this last week because it's literally just rock solid all day long, and my Dr put me on bed rest for a few days but after a few nsts he didn't seem worried...
  • @Nvrforgetable Really?? Oh man! Yeah, I'm worried my doctor might need to do the same. It makes me feel a little better that your doctor didn't seem TOO concerned though.. Thank you so much for replying to my post. :)
  • Having the same issue. Can't wait to hear what you find out.
  • Yeah seriously and they didn't go away I'm sitting here in my new house waiting on the ac guy and I swear my stomach is like a stone table. My god it's so uncomfortable if u find anything different I'd love to hear it tho! I really trust my ob and midwives so if it was that abnormal I'd hope they'd say something!
  • I have Braxton Hicks, but what you're describing sounds more like how mine gets when I'm gassy/bloated and/or experiencing constipation.  Are any of those things issues?

I find it really uncomfortable, but once the gas is released, the hardness/tightness subsides.
  • I was at the OB today too. Spent an hour doing a NST and didn't have a single contraction (according to the monitors) but my stomach was rock hard the whole time.

  • My stomachs hard a lot of the time. Seems to get harder as the day goes on. When I wake up it doesn't even feel like a pregnant belly lol it just feels uncomfortable
  • I spent two days in the hospital this week due to BH. They told me I was dehydrated even though I drink several bottles of water a day. They said I need to drink at least 6 full 32 oz bottles of water a day, if not more. They also said that basically any other drink will not hydrate as well as water (which is all I've been drinking for weeks now).
  • @BrittnieMariee Holy crap!! I'm definitely not drinking 6 32oz bottles a day... More like 6-8 16oz bottles a day (plus milk, lemonade, etc. every now and then). That's a crazy amount of water, I'd be sitting on the toilet all day if I was drinking that much (I already feel like I am!) I hope you're feeling better! I guess maybe because I'm almost 37 weeks my doctor was less concerned? I'm not sure. :/
  • @shaunnar053 I have definitely been peeing so much, it's pretty ridiculous! But I was only 33+5 when I went to the hospital so they were really worried. They've managed to get my contractions to stop (thanks to lots of water and some medicine that makes me shake non-stop). Heading to the doctor today for an ultrasound and follow up with one of my doctors. Hoping we can keep baby boy cooking for at least 3 more weeks (I'm 34+1 today)
  • @BrittnieMariee well I'm glad you got everything under control for now! I'm sorry you've had to deal with all that crap, especially so close to the end, we're almost there! :)
  • This may be a silly question, but when do you get a NST? I'm going for my last ultrasound and measurement of the baby next week I'll be 35 and a half weeks. Is it something that they do in the last 4 weeks until baby comes?
  • @lolad5 I'm not sure. I've never gotten one. I think they're only given if there's a reason or if you're high risk, I could be wrong though. :/
  • @shaunnar053 I believe you are correct. I looked it up on the good ol' trusty Google.
  • @shaunnar053 thank you! I'm glad we're all almost there! Our appointment went well and the ultrasound was very reassuring! Soon enough we'll all have our precious babies with us
