Peppermint Oil for Headaches

I have had some awful headaches this pregnancy. I tried Tylenol, a cold cloth on my head and back of my neck, & caffeine - nothing worked. The one thing that did seem to help was putting peppermint oil on my temples. For those of you suffering from these dang headaches, it might be worth a try! Hope you all feel better soon! <3

ETA - nothing worked

Re: Peppermint Oil for Headaches

  • I've just come on here looking for headache tips. I've been having headaches almost daily for the past couple of weeks, and today's has been the worst by far. I've been trying Tylenol, hot compress on my head, fluids and of course rest. Nothing has helped. I'll try to find some peppermint oil, I'm glad it worked for you!

  • Peppermint oil is my first go to! Love me some essential oils!!
  • Just remember to dilute it properly.
  • Peppermint oil is one of my favorites but try not to use it when you hit the third trimester because it can inhibit milk production.
  • I do peppermint oil too and lavender oil. I will dab some on each wrist when I am out and about and sniff them back and forth to help me function a little better.
  • Peppermint oil is a life saver. I've had daily headaches as well and it's the only thing to give me relief. Whole foods has it in a roller that's great!
  • @Adyer7, I need to find it in a roller, that would be amazing.

I used peppermint oil in third tri to try to get my breech baby to flip. It didn't work, mind you, but I tried every home remedy out there and that was one of em. I know this is beside the point...just thinking of fond memories. ;)

Interesting, I had know idea you could use it for that.

  • I use essential oils for everything. If you put peppermint oil on the roof of your mouth it is like a headache bomb going off. I use it to treat my migraines. It is amazing!!! I use young living oils but there are multiple options out there.  I also use thieves oil to combat germs I encounter at work.
  • @Jstarlinghodge thanks for the tip! I'll have to try that!

Just a little tip. Not all brands of essential oils can be ingested so just be sure you have the right kind. Also make sure the peppermint oil is diluted properly especially when pregnant :)
  • Do you still have to dilute peppermint oil if you're not ingesting it, just massaging it in your skin? May be a dumb question but I'm new to essential oils

  • Yes, always best to dilute with a carrier oil (I like using olive oil). And if you haven't used it before, test a small area first to check for irritation. Peppermint is a bit strong and can irritate some people's skin.

  • Yes it's a 1% dilation so 1 drop to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil.
  • Always always use a carrier oil (coconut oil, olive oil, sunflower oil etc.) Never apply neat (without a carrier oil) unless it's a blend that specifically says it contains a carrier oil.
  • I use peppermint oil. For headaches I rub it on my temple for 30-60 seconds usually before bed if I can wait and then when I wake up it is gone. I had to do it a lot during the end of my 11th and beginning of my 12th week. Definitely works.

  • You guys just might be saving my life right now. These headaches are killer. Now I just need to find some. Can you get this at a pharmacy? Or do I need to find a rep of some sort that sells these oils?

  • @jellybellybean3 I got mine off amazon but if your grocery store has a natural section, it's probably be there. Or a vitamin store.

  • Yes, thank you! I didn't know I needed to dilute it!

Thanks for the recommendations ladies! I bought some at work yesterday (we have one brand at my pharmacy in a big box store.) I have zero familiarity with this stuff, but it's definitely worth a shot!
Bonus: I can start recommending them since now I have a clue how to use them!

ETA: I'll obviously do my own research before willy-nilly recommending essential oils to everyone. I've just never bought into the idea enough before to bother looking into it. You've all inspired me!

    Awesome, Thank you!

  • I saw this thread yesterday and didn't think much of it because i don't usually get headaches.... Well so of course I got a head ache last night before bed! I had some peppermint oil, diluted with some coconut oil and rubbed into my temples and wrists and it totally worked for me! I also drank a couple glasses of water because that's my go-to for headaches. Thanks for the suggestions!
  • Thanks so much for the suggestions everyone. I've been having headaches with no relief now I just have to find some peppermint oil to try.
