Ab work (mc mentioned)

hey ladies who exercise-

I am trying to be super cautious this first trimester as far as exercise since I had a loss in May. I'm going to stay active - just lifting lighter weights, not going as hard during cardio, avoiding some yoga poses. As far as ab work- I've read that it is fine to continue first trimester and read that it's not. What's everyone doing for ab work??

Re: Ab work (mc mentioned)

  • My workouts at CrossFit pretty much all involve core strength, so I'm working out my abs every day. I'm not doing much for isolated abs because we just don't do it that often since our normal movements involve abs so much.

  • Good for you! Keep it up. I teach a class that involves some isolated core work on the floor. I wonder if it's ok to do for a few more weeks.

  • I've been doing abs.

    3 miscarriages - 1 DS (6) - 1 DD (3)  - #3 due March 30!

  • I plan to do abs until my baby boot camp trainer tells me to start modifying them

  • I plan to do them till I can't anymore. Once I start really showing then I'll probably start modifying.
  • From what I've read one of the best ab workouts throughout the entire pregnancy (to the extent you feel up to doing them) is planks. I usually do crunches so I'm going to continue through first-tri (once I'm off restrictions, hopefully Weds) and then incorporate planks.

I actually just called the nurses to confirm that volleyball, running, tennis were still okay.  Basically she said that as long as you aren't starting a new program and you modify when you need to and stay hydrated, it's generally okay to continue what you were doing.

I do remember, from last time, that ab work on the floor / lying on your back needs to be modified sooner than you typically think (sometimes as early as 12 weeks) because of the weight / pressure on inferior vena cava can compress it and you don't want to risk reducing or cutting off the blood supply to baby.
