Questions to ask at first appointment

I will be 5.5 weeks on Friday and have my first doctors appointment. The first step is doing blood work to confirm pregnancy and check hcg levels. But I am wondering what questions I should ask :)

Re: Questions to ask at first appointment

  • Any concerns you have over things you do/eat, the rest should be covered pretty in depth by the health questionnaire. I find that to be the case with my first.

  • I'm sure they will overload you with packets of info :) But here are some questions I asked (some of which got answered before I even asked) with my first baby
    1) How many U/S do you do during a pregnancy (if you are not high risk)
    2) When will my first U/S be?
    3) What foods and activities do you suggest I stay away from? (This varies so much doctor to doctor that IMO it's best to ask them directly instead of going down the Google Rabbit Hole so that you know where your Dr stands and can follow their advice)
    4) If you don't see a group of OBs and just a single Dr you might ask what would happen if you went into labor and they were not available (ie on vacation etc)

I can't think of anything else right now.

  • Ditto all PP questions. I might also ask about sex--If it's safe this early and if not when it will be.

  • I know my body is going to go through a lot of changes but when should I be worried and call you?

  • I think it depends on your individual concerns. Like I am a big runner so I definitely want to talk with my doctor about how much I should run and how much is too much. Last time I asked about spray tanning (horrible!). I feel like most people know all of the foods that many doctors recommend you avoid (raw meat/fish, alcohol, too much caffeine, cold cuts, anything unpasteurized, etc. etc.)... but you could ask for clarification on that stuff. I would also ask about what to do if you have spotting, for example, or get sick... what is the procedure? I can't tell you how much the nursing line saved me a couple times off hours! Find out about who will deliver the baby, where delivery is, and if it's practice and anyone might deliver the baby, would you meet other doctors towards the end ? You could also ask about the progression of appointments (how often/how many), ultrasounds, etc. But really I think asking questions just for the sake of asking them is silly. I didn't ask that many at my first appointment because I already knew  a lot of the info and my doctor also told me much of what I wanted to know.

My doc said there really hasn't been extensive research on it but best to avoid... however she gave me the go-ahead if I wanted to use tanning lotion (since it's not inhaled like the spray inevitably is).

  • If you go to group exercise classes, definitely ask for a doctor's note stating that it's ok for you to exercise. Some fitness instructors won't let you workout without one
