Re-intro and question about close birthdays

Hi all, I haven't been here in awhile, but since I'm pregnant with #2 I've been coming around a bit more. We were lazily TTC since I got home from a conference last October and I ended up getting pregnant at the end of April. The crazy thing is, this pregnancy is almost an identical timeline as my first one. My due date is set for 10 days after my son's 3rd birthday (which is also only a couple of weeks after Christmas, eek!) and I'm already freaking out about birthdays. It's not about money, just making sure each child feels special. DS will be getting to the stage soon where he's actually sentient about things like birthdays, Christmas, etc. and I don't want him to feel diminished with a new baby...and of course we'll want to do the big 1st birthday deal with the new baby.

Then when they get older, do I combine the parties or try and have two by spreading them out a little, maybe beginning and end of January? My sister and I were 5 months apart, so it was never an issue growing up, except I never got to have any fun in the sun for my bday. LOL My main concern is that my little mama's boy DS doesn't feel like he's loosing out on anything by getting a sibling which is why we are being careful with toddler milestones--don't want to put him in a regular bed, potty train him, and chuck him into preschool all at once just because things are changing. Any advice?

    DS was born at the end of January, and DD was born in mid February. Their birthdays are two weeks apart. Last year when he turned two, we did a combined family Super Bowl/birthday party (my in-laws throw a big Super Bowl party every year so we just piggybacked). It worked out nicely so we will do the same thing this year when he turns 3, and two weeks later we will throw a big first birthday party in our city for DD. In the years to come we will do joint, shared parties unless it is a bigger milestone birthday (5, 13, 16).
