Safety PSA

After witnessing another almost horrible accident happen with a shopping cart I feel I need to put this out there:

Placing your baby carrier on top of the shopping cart is NOT safe. I see this all the time and it makes me so nervous. I understand it's easier to do it that way but it's very dangerous.

Baby wear or use the cute little shopping cart hammocks they make now (they have passed all safety tests and regulations).

Re: Safety PSA

  • Preach!!!!!! I always mention how unsafe that is when I see it happening. Iv responded as an EMT multiple times to infants injured from the car seat on top of the cart. Please don't do it ladies it's not worth the risk.

  • It can also damage the car seat making it unsafe if it was ever in an accident. I admit I did this a few times with dd prior to knowing it could be so dangerous. After that I just wore her in the stores until she could sit in the little seat herself
  • Our grocery store carts actually have a cradle specifically for car seats now that you strap it in like you would with a seat belt install. It's about time!

Thanks guys, I actually was not aware this is a thing people do nor that it would be unsafe.
    I will definitely remember this.

Edit: because I live in NYC and nobody has a car.

  • I want a baby hammock for the cart so much... i just don't want to spend the 50 dollars. = /

  • Wow! Had no idea!
  • I'm confused....ftm but how would a cart cover help for a newborn that can't hold themselves up yet? I never knew doing this was bad.
  • I used to just put the carseat in the actual basket and use the top and/or a hand basket for my shopping. Otherwise, I used an Ergo. I didn't start using cart covers until LOs could sit up independently.

Same as PP, sometimes my little one was surrounded by groceries why they sat in their seat In the actual cart. Obviously I didn't pile them in and on baby...going to be harder with 2 to do this!
  • Ok I was thinking that it I wasn't sure if being there was considered safe either. Thanks ladies!!
  • I see this at least once a week. How can parents really think it's safe to balance a baby on top of a cart? I already feel like putting my toddler in the cart, strapped in and used as directed, is a huge safety risk because he's so active.

Car seat safety education in general should be forced upon parents via their pediatricians. Ours certainly doesn't talk about it.
