Baby Names

My name is Elizabeth Anne. Would it be weird if...

My name is Elizabeth Anne.  My husband and I are really leaning towards the name Anna.  We're really having a hard time agreeing on a middle name.

I happen to think that Anna Elizabeth is just really classic and beautiful.  But... it's just too weird to name my daughter my name in reverse? Right? I can't do it?

Other options we've been tossing around are:

Anna Catherine
Anna Kathleen
Anna Renee
Anna Noelle
Anna Christine
Anna Claire

Would love any thoughts. :)

  • You could totally do it. I don't see anything wrong with it, plus it is a beautiful name. But, Anna Claire would be my second place vote.

No not at all. I am one of several Elizabeths in my family, myself. My adopted sister is also named Elizabeth - and she's much older than me. That's what she is called, without a nickname. The rest of us use diminutives. I am an Ella. My aunt is a Betty and my other aunt is a Lily.

So if my weird family can pass that name around like a joint in the circle, surely you can get away with this sweet tribute to your own name. And you're right. It's a lovely name.
  • Men have a Jr. and no one thinks that's strange, so I see nothing wrong with Anna Elizabeth. If you decide against it, all of your middle names are nice. My favorite is Anna Claire.

  • Go for it! Not weird at all. It's a beautiful name!
  • I am in the other camp.  I think a LO deserves their own name.  If you like Ann and Elizabeth so much, I would just use one of the names and give her her own name.  I would go with Anna Claire from your list.

  • I think it's perfectly fine. I also really like Anna Catherine.

    EDD for #1: 3/19/17
  • Most people probably wouldn't even realize unless you go by both names and your daughter did as well. I don't think it is something I would do, but that being said it's my favourite of your options and both names are very classic so I think it would be fine.
  • I think its fine and I don't think anyone is going to notice...especially long term
  • Thanks ladies.  Has given me a lot to think about.

On a related note... I love Anna Claire and Anna Catherine the most, I think.

I'm worried Anna Claire sounds like a dessert... again, am I crazy? :)  Thanks for your tolerance of the over-thinking woman, everyone :)

  • I hadn't thought of that, but I see what you mean! I don't think it's a big deal though.

I also love Anna Catherine and Anna Kathleen

  • I love Anna Claire!

  • I don't like the idea either. Yes they are both lovely names but I like the idea of giving your LO a name of her own.
  • I wouldn't do it but I don't think anything is wrong with it. I love Anna Claire and Anna Noelle though.

    I like Anna Claire.
  • Do it! I love it! My name is Emily, and if my baby is a girl I think I'm going to use Emilia for Fn or mn. Which is similar. It's like naming your daughter after you without it being exactly the same. I'm sure she would love her name knowing it's a piece of you.
  • Not gonna lie, it would strike me as vain. Other have brought up Juniors as well and I see that practice as the same thing. I feel like one name, even a derivative, in common (preferably not the first name) is plenty.
  • I personally wouldn't do it. Only because I see Ann/Anna/Elizabeth as filler names. (No offense!!!) I do love Anna Claire, though. It has a very pretty, elegant sound to it.
  • Anna Elizabeth is so classic and just beautiful! It's feminine yet regal. It's the prettiest name I've seen on here:). I say go for it☺️

Yes I hear "an eclair" with Anna Claire. Love the names but I'm not sure if use them together for that reason.
  • I like it! I also like Anna Catherine. It's a very strong name to me, but feminine.

I liked Anna Claire until you mentioned the desert thing and now that's all I can hear. But I think Anna Elizabeth is really sweet, and like a couple pp mentioned it's not something that will be blazingly obvious since day to day you just use first names. I hope you go for it!!
  • I'm an Anna Elizabeth, and I've tried to convince DH of Elizabeth as a first name or Anne as a middle name and he won't even buy off on that. I love my name, though, and I agree that most people will never know that it's close to yours.

I really liked Anna Claire until you pointed out the "eclair"...Anna Catherine would be great as well!

  • It is lovely. I would do it for sure! My niece, Victoria Ann, just named her daughter Anna Victoria . Not weird at all.
  • I'd not. She deserves at least one name that is hers. Or at least a name from a different family member in combination with Anna.
