so my milk has finally came in...while I was in the hospital I attempted to BF and it didn't work out . He'd latch to one side and not the other or not feed long enough .
Because of that my breast are so engorged now and I don't know what to do .
I don't have a pump and I tried to hand express for relief and still didn't work . I was also tried to get my LO to latch but he wouldn't take it I'm assuming he's already used to bottle nipples because he was not interested at all and as soon as I have him the bottle he took it . I was even given a hand pump before I left the hospital just incase I decided to try BF again so I tried using that and did nothing but make my breast tighter and hurt more .

Someone please help me out what can I do !?
I wanted to save my milk so I can bottle it for my LO but at this point I just want relief!! :((

  • Hot rags on them and massage the tight areas. Then try using your pump. If you want to get rid of your milk do not face the water in the shower and frozen lettuce worked for me whenI stopped pumping with DD.

  • Can you hire an electric pump from the hospital or a pharmacy? If you plan to keep saving your milk I think your best bet is to get an electric one so you can not only relieve the engorgement but fill bottles faster (haven't used hand pumps but it sounds a bit painful).

Or purchase one second hand from a reliable source. All the 'gross' parts are cheap and can be purchased from pharmacies.

When my DD started sleeping longer in the night I used to have to get up and hand express over the bathroom sink - just got things going then let it drip for a few minutes which provided instant relief. Good luck!
  • My MIL swears a leaf of cabbage on each side will extract breast milk?
I would try a hot shower! Hope you feel better!
  • Honestly I would go in to see a LC. You should be able to hand express to get more comfortable so the fact that you can't tells me that someone experienced needs to help you with a hands on approach. The reality of BF is that there are a lot of things to troubleshoot that has to be done in person. I'd love to help but it could be a number of things. For example, you could be so engorged that you're teetering on having a blocked milk duct or mastitis and if you don't empty your breast soon, you could get mastitis. It could also simply be that you have really firm breast tissue and only a good double electric can clear your breast out.
I would explain how little your baby is (thus a bit of urgency), how sore and uncomfortable you are, and your complete inability right now to empty your breast no matter what method. They should see you as soon as possible and you really should do a 1 month rental of a hospital pump. Even if you decide to stop, it will help you wean down your supply or it may make you more successful at BF when you have a pump strong enough to work. There are a lot of conveniences I would forgo to rent a pump in this situation. I hope things improve!

  • Does your hospital have an on call lactation consultant? If so, I'd try calling them for help too.

This. Also, this is why I recommended an electric pump. You definitely sound engorged.

  • This lady gave me some tea that is supposed to help your milk supply build up and such. I haven't tried it yet or anything. Maybe you can look into it. I'll get the name of it for you. She told me a lot of moms use it and it has great vitamins and such for baby.
  • I have no advice on the boob stuff. But when you post topics try and title it like "boobs hurt" or engorment. Help doesn't allow other posters to search if they are having a similar issue.

  • I definitely recommend a lactation consultant TODAY. Insurance should cover it and you'll just pay your dr copay. They are amazing and super professional. I'm sure your baby can get the hang of this. Don't give up yet, it sounds like your body is well equipped and ready.

  • I wouldn't assume there is no hope for Breast Feeding at this point. You probably both need a llittle help from a Lactation Consultant, if that is something you want to do.
  • All of the above...but in the meantime YouTube some videos on hand expression. That should help with the engorgement right now.
  • You need an electric pump. Hospitals will sometimes allow you to rent one. I wouldn't wait too long, like PP said, you can get a blocked duct or mastitis. I had mastitis and I thought I was dying. No joke. If you feel like you get a "hot spot" anywhere in either breast, get to your OB asap.

  • I was super engorged just two days ago and it was so painful I couldn't sleep. I did a combo of hot baths and cold compresses and pain relief medication (Tylenol), which helped. My daughter is nursing well though, so it may be different. Just want you to know I feel your pain and it will get better! Good luck!
  • Totally agree with everyone else. Get a double electric pump & see a lactation consultant. I had a horrible time BFing my older son who is now almost 5. Our lactation consultant was a lifesaver. We did supplement with formula from the beginning, & he didn't have nipple confusion (thanks to amazing nurses & the lactation consultant ). Of course it's up to you, but all hope is not lost. Don't give up if you have your heart set on it. The first several weeks were a huge struggle for me, but I stuck with it & ended up breastfeeding for 2 years! Good luck! :-)

  • With my first I was super sick at 2 weeks post partum.
I was so sad I got sick, but by the time I was off the antibiotics he was already uses to bottles

I took frozen cabbage leaves and ace bandages and wrapped them up. They dried out.
