Babies on the Brain

Trying to stay excited

My husband and I have been talking pretty seriously about TTC for the first time. Seriously enough that I have stopped taking my pill and have started taking prenatal vitamins. We are 29 and have been happily married for 8 years. I am having a hard time staying exited about having a baby. My mind automatically shifts to the negative aspects, which makes it hard to to focus on all of the wonderful things that come with starting a family. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice on staying positive and getting excited versus being scared?

Re: Trying to stay excited

  • Is there a particular negative that worries you more than others? Maybe if you can pinpoint what is worrying you then you can take steps to mitigate it. For example, if the money aspect worries you, talk to a financial advisor and start saving. If it's the effect of a baby on your marriage, see a counselor now to fine tune your communication skills and strengthen your relationship. Otherwise I think a mix of excitement and nerves is healthy and normal. But if the negatives outweigh the positives, now may not be the right time.

  • I'd have to say, I agree with the above comment.  My DH and I are both 29 as well and have been married for 5yrs.  We are planning to start TTC next month.  While I am extremely excited for this, I am very nervous as well.  There are aspects of having a child that do worry me.  For example, like stated above, the effect on our relationship after having a baby.  Because of this, we have been focusing on developing stronger communication skills. Even though, I am nervous, I'm excited to embark on this new chapter of our lives.

I think you should make a list of all the things that excite you about having a baby, and all the things that make you nervous.  Once you find out the root of your fear, maybe you can take steps to eliminate that fear.  Just keep thinking about all the wonderful things having a baby will mean, and I'm sure that will overcome all the fears you may have.

  • Thanks guys! My husband is super excited, and just seeing the huge smile on his face when we talk about it makes me feel better. I have a general fear of the unknown this is obviously a pretty big unknown. I talked to my husband about my nervousness and he is being super helpful.
