Advice

Hi girlies!!!
Congratulations on all of your adorable babies! I am curious about how you are feeling after csection (about 2 1/2 weeks out of surgery) and what your Dr suggests regarding flying after a csection... 'I am' a bridesmaid in a wedding that I will have to fly to be in after my baby is born. I am 8 weeks, so have not told the bride (or anyone!) The wedding is about 2 1/2 weeks after my EDD... I had a rough recovery with my first baby, but do not remember the details and time frames postpartum (my first baby was emergency csection and my incision is high, a few inches beneath belly button) Please let me know your thoughts. TIA

Re: Advice

  • I did not have a c section and this is my first baby, but I wouldn't have felt like being in a wedding that I could've driven to, much less having to fly. Would your doctor even okay that?

  • I would give it at least 4 weeks. 2 1/2 is just not long enough.
  • Plus say LO is born a week after your EDD, you'd only be 1.5 weeks out, a very possible scenario. That would be insane, unless you're Kate Middleton. If you're not you should back out of being in the wedding now while the bride has time to change her plans. Maybe you could leave it open to still attending the wedding if by some miracle you're feeling up to it. I'm a bridesmaid in an upcoming wedding and LO will be 2 months and I'm even a little nervous for it.
  • Thank you!!!
  • I didn't have a c section but I was miserable 2 weeks PP. Intense bleeding, swollen belly, and leaky boobs... Yeah no way. I'm sure it'd be worse after a c section! Plus, I'm not sure flying with a 2 week old is a great idea. My pedi said they worry about their ears and the pressure plus the germs. I'd say no.
  • Oh ya I would never fly 2.5 weeks after giving birth - let alone after a csection. Hell no!
  • I've had 2 sections and no way would I travel at 2.5 weeks, especially fly, unless there was a family emergency.
  • Are you planning on a repeat c section? If you are then I guess it partly depends when your doctor wants to perform it - for example if they do it at 39 weeks then you have 3 1/2 weeks to recover which is a bit better, although still tough.
  • Yeah I didn't have a c section either but 2 weeks after there was no way I was doing anything like that. A trip to the grocery was still pretty exhausting.

  • It took at least 4 weeks for me to be able to walk more normal and stand straight after my c-section. I'm 6 weeks postpartum now and have been able to take normal walks again (as opposed to shorter walks outside).
  • I was at a wedding five days after my second csection and felt fine apart from the water retention.

By 2.5 weeks post surgery, I was physically good both times. That said, I have a very high tolerance for pain and have been told that I'm a bit of a freak whe it comes to recovery.

Agree with this...if you're doing another C typically the doctor will schedule it for 38-39 weeks to reduce the chance of you going into natural labor first...ehich would give you slightly more recovery time.

My other question would be what your plan is for the baby at the wedding? If you're breastfeeding it may not be ready for a bottle yet, so you'd have to be comfortable (as would the bride) having your very small baby at the wedding, or getting a sitter. I don't think I would have wanted to do either of those things with a 4 week old (or younger).
  • Thank you all for the suggestions!!! It is very helpful! I would plan on bringing lo with me... But I did not even think about about germs, ears, etc! I will be seeing my dr Monday for my 8 wk apt and will be sure to ask thoughts from about flying! Also, like I said I am not sure about recovery since I had a tough recovery with my 1st baby, but I don't remember the timing. I do know that I had to have a refill for extra pain meds, but I can't take anything with codeine, so the pain meds I take may not be as strong??? Idk thanks again!!!

Our peds were super strict about keeping LO away from people for the first 4 weeks. No non siblings under the age of 5 could visit (nephews and nieces haven't met him yet). It's a HUGE deal if you baby got a fever under 4 weeks. It involves a spinal tap, 2 blood draws, a urine sample and antibiotics automatically. Way too many germs flying and at a wedding.
Edit: I had a vaginal birth and it took me almost 3 weeks to feel a little normal again. Had a lot of pain standing for too long and sitting.
  • About the flying...SIL brought our nephew on a plane home for Thanksgiving at 6 weeks, but personally I'd want to wait until LO has the first round of vaccinations before doing that. Too many crazies out there that won't have flu shots/tdap boosters up to date. Fevers under 4 weeks are also a huge deal I'd like to avoid.
  • I didn't have c section but even at 6 weeks pp I'm just starting to feel normal(in every aspect) I couldnt imagine doing a wedding plus travelling a distance with LO.

Of course it'll come down to your own choice but at 2.5 weeks just keep in mind there won't really be any routine with LO, still be feeding on demand. What happens if LO needs to eat in the middle of the ceremony or photographs?
