External Version

I am interested in hearing from anyone who has attempted this. I am 38w4d. DS has been breech the entire pregnancy. My doctor has scheduled me for an ECV for Tuesday in the hospital with an epidural. If it doesn't work we will do a c section but if it does he will send me home and let labor come naturally. I am still trying all the tricks to make him flip on his own but since he hasn't yet I assume he won't. Just want to know about success rate and how painful.

Re: External Version

  • I tried this procedure last week at 37w5d but with no epidural. It is very painful and unfortunately was not successful. But I wanted to at least try it since nothing else had worked for me either and I wanted a shot at natural birth for this and future children (our hospital doesn't do vbac). I don't regret the choice but just make sure you are mentally prepared. I'm guessing the epidural option would make it a wholly different experience though. We are scheduled for c-section at 39w2d. Good luck and hope baby cooperates for you! :)

  • I wasn't given any pain medication for my ECV. I haven't even heard of that option. I was just given a medicine that made my uterus soften, so it wouldn't contract. About 30 minutes later my doctor came in, checked baby on the ultrasound machine, rubbed oil on my belly, and got started. She pressed down hard on my belly with one hand on her butt and the other on her head, tried turning her in a forward roll, that didn't work, so she did a backwards roll and baby flipped around to head down. It took just a couple minutes and we were done. It was very uncomfortable but it was so quick it wasn't too bad. I've heard some peoples ECVs take longer, so I guess it depends on your doctor. I was monitored for an hour and a half and sent home. Just had some soreness that night and the next day.
  • I had one done last week at 37 weeks. It wasn't that painful, at least nothing like I expect labor to be. I didn't have medication beyond the shot to soften my uterus. The actual procedure took less than a minute and my little one is now in the correct position.
  • Thank tou for your responses. Hoping it works but accepting the fact that it could turn into a c section. My doctor was holding out hope he would turn on his own but no luck.
  • My LO has been breech the entire pregnancy as well, and we're scheduled for an ECV Monday morning. My old OB (we just moved several states away last week) said success rates hover around 50-60% generally, but can be dramatically higher or lower depending on the doctor's skill at the procedure and the position of the baby. My new OB, who I just met Thursday and greatly dislike, is very conservative (the opposite of my husband and I) and tried to dissuade us from attempting an ECV and push for a scheduled cesarean. She said she doesn't do them often, which coupled with her obstetrical philosophy, makes me think we'll be unsuccessful.
Thanks ladies for sharing your experiences on what to expect. Definitely helps ease the mind.
  • Update: we attempted the external version on Tuesday with no success. He would not budge. We were taken back immediately for a c section. He now have a beautiful healthy baby boy. All 21.5 inches of him were crammed up in my ribs. I am glad we tried and happy to have him here with no issues.
