3 car seats in a subaru?

Ok, so I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old and one on the way.  The one on the way was a surprise so when we bought our Subaru Outback last year, we only had planned on fitting 2 car seats, which is no problem.  Now when baby comes we will need an infant one to fit with a 2 other forward facing ones.

We just got an Evenflo Big Kid Booster Seat for our 3 year old, we have an average size convertable seat for my 1 year old (forward facing), and I was looking for the slimmest infant seat on the market.

I think we can make it work, I have seen some small ones like Baby Trend, but I was curious to see if any other mommies have any suggestions on 3 car seats in one back seat.  I am just not a "van person" so I am on a mission to make it work!  Thanks!

  • Posting so I can check back.  I am in the same situation and do not want to give up my car!

  • I have a van so I'm not any help, but we are in the same boat none the less. I think you an make it work I would sugest maybe putting the slimmer of the 2 older children cars seat in the middle that might help you make room.
  • The outback is really hard to get three across in. I would bet you would need 2 sunshine kids Radians to get them to easily fit. Your 3 year old would probably be better suited for a harnessed seat.

You should post this on https://www.car-seat.org/. You do not have to registar to ask a question and I know there are several Suburu owners on there.

  • Not only would it be really cramped, but the Outback manual and our dealer specifically say they do not suggest a car seat in the middle of the back row.  You're supposed to put a car seat on either side but not in the middle.
  • Wow! I'm just surprised that you have two in there now!!! My husband drives our Outback and I just got a van because we could just not see how we could have two seats in the back with two adults riding comfortably in the back. Once my DS was forward facing things got better but when he was rear facing in his infant seat the front was TIGHT. Good for you for making two work!! I have to agree with pp though - I have also heard that you are not supposed to put a seat in the middle. Good luck!

  • It can be done.  Sunshine seats are pretty narrow.  I have an evenflo triumph that is much wider than my britax roundabout (found that out trying to put in a booster, carseat, and large adult male in the back of our saab.)  I would say that it is worth buying new car seats over a new car anyday.
