Scar tissue on my cervix

here's a topic I haven't seen yet! 39 week checkup today and still not dilated. While poking around my doc asked if I had anything done to my cervix. I had a biopsy for HPV about 10 years ago. That created scar tissue. I'm researching now and it looks like that could prevent dilation. Lovely!! Does anyone know anything more about this?

Re: Scar tissue on my cervix

  • My sister had some that the dr "ripped" open and she delivered vaginally. She had an epi so she didn't feel it. I am sure it depends on how much you have.

  • I had a LEEP procedure years before having my first child and I didn't go into labor on my own and had to be induced. The scar kept me from dilating. It's great news that your dr is aware of this so they can better help you. For some reason, my midwife and dr never made the connection and I went through a lot more trouble than I needed to.

  • If it was just a biopsy you should be fine (I would think) since it is probably just in one or two spots. I had a LEEP and the scar tissue from that can prevent dilation and sometimes there is a need fir it to be "broken apart" but my OB said it is NBD, she just puts her fingers in there and "pops" it apart if necessary.
  • Great question. I've been wondering the same thing. I had a LEEP procedure done a few years ago and I'm worried that it might be the reason my cervix hasn't made any progress. When I first got pregnant, my doctor said it shouldn't be an issue except that I might have to get a stitch to keep my cervix closed until delivery time (I ended up not needing that). I will definitely ask my doctor again at my appointment on Monday.
  • My cervix is about 50% scar tissue now as I tore my cerclage at 16 weeks and it needed to be massively repaired. We are hopeful that I will be able to dilate and have a vaginal birth but a c-section is a definite possibility. My doctor said there's no hard and fast rule regarding scar tissue on the cervix. Each case varies.
