Does anyone continue to eat sushi while on 2ww?  Or while pregnant?  I've seen mixed reviews around the subject.  I love sushi though

Re: Sushi while on 2ww

  • I did while on 2ww. I won't while pregnant although I think it's really just certain raw fish you shouldn't.

  • I eat sushi and am almost 18 weeks. You just can't eat the raw fish. I stick to shrimp, crab, etc.
  • Some people do eat it while pregnant my sister did but only from a place she knew and trust.

I do in the 2WW! But I choose my fish and restaurant wisely. If you look at the Mayo page about safe foods it talks primarily about the larger fish with high Mercury (no or very limited tuna). But says that some sushi from a place known and trusted isn't dangerous in and of itself. It's not the fish, it's the potential for food poisoning that's dangerous to pregnancy. Ask your Dr, then it's just a personal decision about 'acceptable risk.' There's also a TON of amazing Japanese food that most people never get to because of sushi, so don't ditch your fav restaurant just yet! :)
  • I ate it both in the TWW and while pregnant (including raw fish). I just picked the fish with low Mercury. In the US, all fish has to be frozen before served, so the chances of something going wrong are slim. Plus, whole cultures eat sushi during their entire pregnancies. It's a personal choice, for sure, but I was comfortable doing it. You'll just have to decide on "acceptable risk" as noted above in that well thought out post!

ps - I also had coffee and wine while pregnant. There's a great book called "Expecting Better" that really breaks down the stats so you can understand the risk levels.

  • That is all good insight and that is what I have read also. Stick to fish that is low mercury, Farm raised Salmon, etc.  I watched my DH eat yummy sushi the other night and I was just ordering the cooked rolls.  I really enjoy the raw sashimi, so I will definitely be picky about where I eat it.  I mean, the ladies in Japan all do it...right??

@jnissa I will check out that book.  I like my coffee and wine too..  I figured I would go to decaf and maybe have a glass of red wine maybe 3 or 4 times entire pregnancy- if I just needed to relax.
