HELP

IM A FTM DUE AUG 15 and I went to my checkup today at the doctors where he checked if I was having any contractions but I wasn't. So he checked my cervix which this time around it was a really uncomfortable pressure idk what he was doing. As soon as I got out of the doctors I started to get menstrul type cramps. Got home a few hours later went to the bathroom and had some discharge with a hint of blood.... Now I'm having really bad pains. My question for you ladies is how do I know if I'm having contractions? How do they feel like? And did my doctor stripped my membrane? Aren't they suppose to let you know if they do such procedures! I'm freaking out! Please help!!!

Re: HELP

  • Cal your doctor or head to L&D if you're that concerned. They will be able to hook you up to monitors and tell you for sure.

  • He didnt strip your membrane. These are all common symptoms after a cervix check, but if youre concerned call your dr. You also dont have to agree to future cervix checks, fyi.
  • I'd call your doctor or the doctor on call. See if the cramps develop a pattern or get longer, stronger, and closer together. Let the doctor on call know all your symptoms.

  • Sounds like a standard cervical check.
  • Thanks ladies I called the doctor on call and she had said he most likely stripped my membrane to start the process... To look out for contractions and how close they are together and then go to the hospital. I just honestly don't know what I'm looking out for everyone tells me something different

These are all normal aymptoms after a cervix check. I don't know why so many doctors don't tell women what to expect afterwards, but these are all things that occur regularly after a check. If you really feel bad, call your doctor.

Well I certainly don't know why he would strip your membrane without telling you.

  • After I get a cervical check I feel what you have described but I wouldn't say it's "really bad pains." I guess you will just have to wait and see what happens and if it progresses.
  • Follow what your doctor said to follow. And if you're not sure just head to L&D anyway. Better safe than sorry.

This. Idk why they would tell you he probably stripped your membrane either. Thats something your doctor wouldnt do without a discussion first and if he did I would be pretty upset.

With my 1st my OB stripped my membranes at 38 weeks while doing a cervical check. I wouldn't have known if I hadn't had a sudden discharge of blood that sent my husband in a panic to the nurse. I was ignorant at the time and didn't know any better but after a host of other unecessary interventions I am better educated and wish I had been earlier. Needless to say I have a new OB. Hopefully it's not common practice but some OBs do it without knowledge or consent.

Someone in my birth class had this happen as well. I would be pretty upset. There might be a time were I would be willing to consider a membrane sweep to avoid induction but they better at least ask me first.

Definitely glad I have a good relationship with my midwife and she doesn't do cervical check before labor anyway.
  • Yes when the on call doctor had mentioned it to me over the phone I was upset. Idk why my doctor wouldn't tell me he did that....He has given me a cervical check once a week for the past few weeks now and today it just felt different and the aftermath was really bad cramping.

Wow!! Glad you have a new OB..again I would be PISSED when I found out they did this without consent!
  • Not only am I surprised he did it without telling you, but why would he do it so far from your due date? The person you spoke to on the phone should also check with the doctor to make sure that was done instead of telling you that it was "probably" done.
  • That's what I said! I went again today because I started getting contractions and he told me I'm 4cm dilated! He sent me to the hospital so now I'm just waiting.... I'm freaking out and can't stop crying I'm so scared.... This is so overwhelming... And it hurts :-(
