buying new camera to capture LO and seeking advice

Special snowflake question: Seeking advice for a mostly automatic digital camera to take better pics of LO than my iPhone does. Willing to spend up to $500 or stretch to $700 if needed. No digital SLR.

Any cameras you love? Anything I should stay away from?

The internets have so much advice that I'm just overwhelmed. Thanks in advance. Sorry to start a new thread on such a niche question

I love my Canon G15 (think there is a newer one now) great quality. You can shoot in regular modes or go manual if you want to go all professional. I had a DSLR which was nice but so dang bulky. This isn't compact at all but much lighter than those.

Following this because I'd like a camera as well. I've looked at the DSLRs, but they just make me nervous. I'd like something a little more compact as well.

I like Canon PowerShots. The point and shoot ones. Here's a pic of one with high amount of optical zoom, so great for when you need to really zoom.

I love my cannon SLR. I bought it 10 years ago and spent an obscene amount of $ on it. Worth it. Instant professional quality shots. The same thing now is much cheaper. I actually justified it because we thought we'd start trying for kids. Then DS1 took 5 years to show up. I could have waited for the prices to come down!

I really like my Panasonic Lumix ZS50. It's not overly expensive but definitely the picture quality is better than the price suggest.

We have a Nikon 5300 and it's amazing. Kind of bulky, but literally takes the most incredible photos just using the default settings (the internet says the default settings are the best unless you are a true photographer, which I am not). We paid about $550 for it.
