induction soon. what are your opinions?

Hi, first time mommy here! I am 40 weeks, this Saturday will be 41 weeks...i just started my pre-labor. My mucus plug has come and small contractions come and go. Eager for my water to break, but nothing yet. My Dr. has scheduled my induction for Saturday at 6am and I want this to be as natural as possible. What do you think about me having my induction scheduled at 41 weeks and just barely starting my labor? Just curious....oh I'm 100% effaced and 1cm dilated from Monday.

Re: induction soon. what are your opinions?

  • I'm not exactly sure what answer you're looking for but many doctors (including mine) do not induce until 42w unless there is a good reason. Why not ask your doctor for more time? You could ask for a NST or other tests to see if baby is ok and if so gain a few more days to see if labor goes on its own.

  • If I was having early signs of labor I'd hold off a couple days for induction. I second the NST. Walk, water, sex.
  • If the induction is unavoidable at that time, in theory it should happen relatively quickly if your body is getting ready to go! Better than inducing when your body is not ready anyway.
  • Your body is already beginning labor on its own, inducing should go fairly easy for you:) I guess you could talk to your doctor about waiting but you still have an entire day, Id start walking to speed things up!
  • I agree with asking for more time. My practice likes to induce between 41-42 weeks. I'm 40w3d now and have already said I'm waiting the full 42 weeks if I get that far. Of course I'll be having a NST and fluid check to make sure baby is healthy while we wait. That's scheduled for 41 weeks. I've been walking, having sex, bouncing on an exercise ball, and had a massage yesterday.
  • i don't believe your doctor will hold with that appointment now that you've progressed this far I'd assume they'd let you go naturally.
  • Ask to hold off, get a membrane sweep, walk, sex.
  • I had an induction due to low amniotic fluid. When they started the pitocin, I was already 3 cm dilated and 80 percent effaced. My labor went so fast. I was at 10 cm in about 4 hours with no need for an epidural until I was ready to push and decided I wanted one since baby was in a bad position and they were going to try to manipulate him.

I ended up with an emergency c section due to the cord getting in the way of baby coming out but I was really surprised how bad the induction wasn't. I pictured it much worse but for me it was like bad period cramps up until the last half hour (I should mention that my period cramps are extremely bad compared to most women though). I can't guarantee yours will go the same way, since everyone is different, but that was my experience.
  • What is your doctor's induction plan? I'm a STM and since I'm already dilated a 2 at 36 weeks my doctor said induction for me this time around would just be breaking my water and letting me walk laps. No cervical ripening or pitocin. I would not electively choose the drug induction route again.
  • Thank you ladies, all of this info is extremely helpful
