February 2016 Moms

Sip and See...

Are you having one? Or have you had one before? Any tips for someone having one in an area where they are uncommon? Or for someone like me who has never even been to one?

I'm a second time mom and I declined the offer for a second shower. I am very interested in a sip and see though because I love parties and getting family and friends together, and I thought it would be a nice way to have everyone meet the new baby.

Re: Sip and See...

  • FTM so I'm having a shower; but IMO it's a great idea for the 2nd, 3rd child, etc...in theory. My major hang-up would be that executing is going to be difficult in February. You've got flu season and a lot of regular colds/bugs going around. Shutting everyone up in a stuffy, heated house would make me too nervous. I think it would translate better to nicer times of the year, when everyone could congregate outside!
That being said, I still love the concept instead of another shower. Good luck!!

  • I'm not going to have one and I never been to one. I like my space and I don't want to invite a bunch of people over for them to pass baby around.
  • I'm considering it, but probably won't for many reasons. Just a few of which are that it is flu season, and I don't possible know when I would feel up to it after a c section. Maybe in March. It April, but not right away.
  • I was under the impression it doesn't take place until a few months after baby is born so it would just miss flu season. I can't imagine throwing a party with a brand new newborn! That seems crazy.

I had end of March or so for a timeline in my head. I'd still probably have the same concerns at that point...which are totally area-specific I just realized!! I'm in New England, so trying to plan anything through April would be iffy as to whether or not winter/cold season would have ended!
  • We may have one (2nd time mom) but will most likely wait til March or even April (EDD 2/1) so the baby will be 1-2 months old and will also give us time to adjust to life with a toddler and a newborn. We are planning on putting our house up for sale in the coming weeks to buy a bigger forever home so we'll see where we are with that come next spring and decide then if we'll have the get together at our new home or just have it at one of the grandparent's homes. Either way,it will be simple snacks and beverages and just laid back since that's what we like :) . I've never been to one so I don't know what people usually do at these types of things but honestly I don't really care for a lot of the stereotypical things that happen at these events and just want to have a family gathering to catch up/introduce baby.
  • I do like the idea but we may just end up skipping any baby related party and just have a BBQ when baby is 4-6 months. I guess it would accomplish the same purpose and guests wouldn't feel obligated to bring a gift which would be a plus.

  • I personally hate the idea of them for me and my baby. I'd go to one but as far as everyone passing around my baby...not for me.

Maybe if it was going to be warmer with the pool&bbq....I would feel different because there is something else for everyone to do. But I feel like people would just be waiting for their turn to hold my baby during flue season.

It's just not for me. Lol

I'm pretty introverted so the thought of a sip and see sounds just awful to me. But I'd gladly attend one for a friend. It just depends on your personality if that is something you're comfortable with. I can't think of anything worse than tons of people crowding around me and my new baby lol. But again, that's just my personality.
  • Nope and nope. I'm not one of those, "here, pass my tiny baby around and kiss its face with your germy lips" type of people. (Which people do with babies in that scenario, no matter what you say to them). Combined with having a bunch of people in my house, having to clean, be on my game, etc. No. Thank. You.

No way! Hosting and entertaining is my favorite! But I'm a bigger fan of the lead-up. I love planning the menu, cooking, decorating, etc. but when it comes to the actual event, I get a little uncomfortable... worrying if people are having a good time, if the music is right, if I'm mingling enough and if anyone is spilling anything on or walking on my white rug with their shoes lol

    I also haaate the cleanup!

I also always wake up the next day with a massive hangover  because all my anxiety about the event leads me to drink more wine than I should. I also drink as I cook so I'm loose for when people arrive (I can be relatively shy) -- obviously, not now that I'm pregnant though! Or probably much every again because I'll be a mom lol. A buzz is good, but not waking up with a hangover when you're a mom- that seems un-mom like and inappropriate haha. Those days are over womp womp

  • I like to host too, but as I'm thinking back to the lack of sleep with ds, we may have a sip and see around July in conjunction with ds 3rd birthday.
  • We won't be having one. Mainly because I don't want anyone at my house and if people want to see us and the baby they'll need to visit at the birth center.

  • I wouldn't mind having one, only if I could hire a cleaning lady to come in before and after....that's the only part that makes me dread having one..

  • I kind of had one with baby #2.  He was born in early January and i believe he was about a month old when we did it.  It wasn't at my house though.  a friend threw it and there weren't that many people there.  maybe 10-12.  People that were sick were definitely respectful and either didn't come at all or stayed away from the baby.  I guess with #2, keeping them away from cold an flu season is almost impossible b/c I still took #1 to daycare while i was at home.  with another little kid around the house already it's definitely more difficult to be crazy about germs in my opinion.  other then that, i enjoyed the company after hanging out at home with my new baby, and it was nice to be able to see people at one time instead of having a million random visitors to my house when i just want to be in my pjs ;)

  • Like other people have said, I am not a fan of, "pass the baby." In fact it makes me cringe. I would never consider one until atleast over 3 months old and even then...

This is me for the most part. I dont normally mind friends popping in and out after we bring the baby home, it kind of breaks up time and I enjoy talking about the birth story because my birthing high is good for the first 2 weeks or so.. after that Im exhausted, HA. Im not much for parties and big get-together's so I dont think this would work for me though it does sound kind of fun.

For sure. I don't like the cleanup. Everything else, yes, but no to the cleaning!
