Hooray...Sinus Infection

So my boss came back from a business trip this week (2 weeks in India) and came in with a cold. Since I am his admin I'm in his office quite a bit and didn't think anything of it. Tuesday rolls around and I'm feeling a little off but I just say it's pregnancy and ignore it well over the past few days it's gotten worse and worse. Started out as a cold and went home early yesterday and woke up today to a full blown sinus infection :( Sadly I know these all too well and I didn't think that I would have one during pregnancy, so we are over 20 weeks and not supposed to sleep on our back, but the last few nights I've been so propped up I should just be sleeping in a chair. Neti-pot, lots of water and steam showers are just not doing the trick.

I've read a few other boards from the past and I am doing all the same things that the other ladies have done but it just doesn't seem to work. Since antibiotics aren't the best thing to take while pregnant has any one come up with a safe home remedy that worked?

  • I'm in the same boat. You can safely take Sudafed which is what I've been doing, but I save it for when I'm super desperate.

You have to clear out the infection, check with your Dr. and ask about mucinex. I take it every few hours and just focus on blowing it all out. Gross but it is what it is. Also, there's nothing wrong with taking needed antibiotics when you're pregnant. Your Dr. can tell you that as well. Women go on them all the time for UTIs and other things, do what you have to do to get better and keep it from getting worse.
  • In many cases it is better to avoid unnecessary medication while pregnant.  But if you already have an infection requiring antibiotics, it is best for you and the baby to take the medicine and get rid of it quickly.  Having an untreated infection can actually cause problems during pregnancy such as early labor and other issues if it starts spreading.  The best option would be to talk to both your normal doctor and your OB and have them pick a treatment that is safest for everyone.

    And feel better soon!

  • Antibiotics will probably be the best way to go if it hasn't cleared up in a week or two. You could end up with worse things.
Whenever I get a sinus or upper respiratory infection, and don't get cleared up in a week or so, I've ended up with bronchitis on several occasions as well as walking pneumonia a couple of times.
