Swaddle vs. hand sucking

Little man is breaking out of his swaddler every night and is starting to really like sucking on his hand.
Just curious if anyone gave up swaddling all together so their LO could suck their hands at night. If so, does it help them sleep better or keep them up?

Re: Swaddle vs. hand sucking

  • We stopped swaddling DS's arms at night bc he wanted to suck his hands or thumb.. It's helped him sleep better bc he can put himself back to sleep

  • My LO has started this too. I ordered the Love to Dream swaddle since her Moro reflex is still strong. This way she can still suck on her hands but hopefully won't wake herself up by flinching lol

This. My son sleeps so well in it. 8 pm-5am
Wakes to eat, then a few more hours

I tried looking up this swaddle and I don't understand. Are they able to actually put their hands in their mouth? The one I found shows their hands covered in material. I've never seen these before so I don't get it...

I'm very interested in trying this. DS keeps his hands in his mouth so much while he's awake. If anyone has a picture of their LO in one or a link to a picture I would appreciate it.
  • Our little one wanted her hands right from the beginning so we kept her hands out of the Halo Swaddle for the first five weeks or so. Now we gave up swaddling totally as she loves to sleep with her hands above her head when she's not sucking on them.

I wish I would have seen this before I put my son to bed to get a picture.  He sucks on the material.  When he wakes up in the morning, the fabric over his hands is soaked.  I do give him a pacifier before he goes to bed.  But when he spits it out, he goes for his hands.

  • Thanks @ali0608. I wonder if they have an option with hands out. Haha! I have no clue if LO would suck on fabric or if he just wants his fingers...

If I remember correctly, they do have a version that has removable "sleeves"... so you could even just remove one or the other.
  • Well I just purchased one lol thanks ladies

They have a 50/50 option where one arm is out and one is in.  It's called transitional or something.

  • My son was in the nicu until he was 3 months. He stirs and wakes him self up with his legs but likes his hands by his face. So they would start the saddle below his arms. And it works for him
  • We gave up swaddling long ago. My son sleeps from 11/12-5/6 then back to sleep again till 8/9

Same here, we have not swaddled since a couple days after we came home from the hospital.
  • My swaddle arrived today! I had to wash it so haven't tried it yet but hoping she likes it! My kids always were swaddled forever or try wouldn't sleep!

  • I bought one of these and tried it last night. He just chewed on it and never went to sleep. I also tried one arm out and he just kept flailing it never slept. He breaks out of Velcro swaddles. Any other suggestions??
  • We use miracle blanket and it definitely keeps LO swaddled.... The only one that does! She can't suck her hands with it on, but she won't sleep unswaddled yet.
  • My LO loves sucking on her hands, but it's actually a stimulant that wakes her up and keeps her awake... not something that soothes her. So for now, even though I know she doesn't like it, we still keep her arms swaddled... and we get 8-10 hour nights.

  • I have something similar to the Woombie. It zips up and I love it. Can't stand the swaddlers with Velcro. They're so loud and come up on my lo.
