I went for the ECV and mine was successful. I say it's definitely worth trying. Personally I was more afraid of the c-section but that's just me. The ECV does hurt, but it doesn't last long. Mine was only just a couple minutes, literally. Then I was monitored for an hour and I half, then sent on my way.
I also had an ECV attempt with this pregnancy, but unfortunately it was not successful. My little one did not enjoy trying to be turned! So I was scheduled for a CSection (I ended up going into labour early and progressed so quickly though that I had to deliver vaginally and that went very well. Delivered a healthy baby girl with no issues!)
My sister had an ECV, they tore the placenta in the process, and she ended up with an emergency c-section under general anesthesia. When it came my turn (ironic) about 4.5 months later to decide what to do with my own breech baby, I just opted for the c-section. We both had anterior placentas though so the risk was higher. Talk to your doctors, make sure you know all possibilities, and go with what you are most comfortable with as you will get the whole wide range of opinions and experiences on here. I will say, looking at an impending RCS in about 7.5 hours, I wish I didn't need one, but I still feel I made the right decision for myself and my baby given all of my personal medical information.
I don't think they're interchangeable. I think most docs would recommend you try the ECV first.
Some people really aren't candidates for an EVC or there are less favorable circumstances to attempt one. A dr has to present all options but in the end it's the patients choice as each has its risks. EVC can lead to an emergency c/s while a scheduled c/s can be much more relaxed. Good luck in your choice and hopefully baby flips before you have to choose.
Thanks for your feedback guys! I really appreciate it. We still have a little time so we are hoping she will flip on her own just trying to be prepared as possible when we have to make the decision. Although, the more I read, the more confused I feel.
I was in this situation twice so far this pregnancy and luckily both times she flipped on her own. I had an ECV scheduled at 37 weeks and again at 38 weeks after she flipped back. I obviously decided to try the ECV over having a c-section both times. I had a vaginal delivery with my first and didn't want to change things this time around unless necessary.
They had me go to labor and delivery rather than my Dr's office (that part freaked me out at first) just in case they had to do an emergency c-section. They give you an IV set up just in case of something going wrong. At this point they found out that she was head down and I was discharged.
Hopefully yours decides to flip on their own and you don't have to worry about it!
I feel your pain as I am in the same exact boat. Baby is breech at 38 weeks + 6. I've been to a chiropractor 4 times in the past 2 week to try the Webster technique, but so far we haven't had any luck. I had my ECV scheduled for this past Friday, but I kept going back and forth in my mind. In the end, the risks of the ECV totally freaked me out, so I cancelled the appointment. New plan is a scheduled cesarean unless she flips. I felt between a rock and a hard place, and I told myself I just needed to listen to my instincts.
