Breastfeeding

first time BF but third baby... clueless

I keep reading about how long power side baby is feeding, do you feed baby one side per feeding or one side for an amount of time then the other side for the next feeding? Sorry if that's a dumb question or has been asked multiple times still figuring out this website.

Re: first time BF but third baby... clueless

  • It will completely depend on you, and your baby.  I don't have a huge storage/supply, so my lo tends to drink from both sides each feeding.  Watch/listen for their swallowing.  If you notice they are sucking and sucking with very few/no swallows, offer the other side to be certain they're full.  Start your feeding on the opposite side the next time, etc.

If lo is full after one side/during one side, just start on the next side the next time.

Thank you ladies! I will look up the Kelly website and my local LA Leche league... I'm nervous about asking the LC at the hospital but that's because 9 years ago when I had my first baby they tried to help me but I felt more like she was hindering me. She literally took my baby from my arms to show me different ways to hold her while BF and would touch my breast while I was attempting to feed my baby. So I gave up after 1 day.

ETA: I hope this time it works out much better and they let me try things on my own and only come in to help when I ask them to.
  • She didn't ask at all which is one of the reasons I felt so uncomfortable and irritated by her. I will look up that fb page, and I'm starting with small goals also. My first goal is to bf while still at the hospital. My next goal will probably be to last a week then just keep going from there. I also got a breast pump from my insurance so I'm hoping after a while I can bring that in and build up a supply for when I go back to work.
  • Thank you so much for your replies!
