Decreased movement

hi mommas. I was in a car accident on Friday and went to the ER. They checked the baby and did measurements and all and said that she looked to be just fine. However, she hasn't been moving near as much. Is there any reason for decreased movement. I feel little kicks but not as strong as before? Could the placenta have moved locations?

Re: Decreased movement

  • Your placenta wouldn't move. Have you been more active? Try drinking some juice, laying down and relaxing, then really focus when baby starts getting active.

  • How many weeks are you? Babies go through periods of not moving as much especially after a big growth spurt (week 20 they grow about four inches in length). I wouldn't worry too much because the doctor did say she looked fine. It definitely is nerve wracking though. Hang in there!

  • If you're around 20 weeks she might also be finding her sleep cycle. They start to develop a 12-14 hour sleep cycle, so it may just be that she is sleeping (they start to have REM around this time too- so she might be dreaming- how adorable is that?!?). Call your doctor and let them know you're concerned. They might want to recheck you, just to help ease your mind.
  • I was worried about decreased movement at 20 weeks. Had an appointment yesterday (21 weeks) and midwife said baby was kicking the Doppler like crazy, but I couldn't feel it. She said the baby likely just moved and started kicking the placenta or something and I couldn't feel it as much anymore. Likely is just a coincidence and you would have noticed the decreased movement anyways!

I'm at 23 weeks (just on the Nov-Dec due date cusp) and called my OB about decreased movement a few days ago. Basically my LO was kicking hard and like crazy on Friday (I could see my stomach move) and as of a few days ago seemed to be barely moving.  She said that before 26 weeks (I've read other places 28 weeks) they generally don't worry about it at all but that I could do kick counts to try to reassure myself. She suggested lying down in the evening or whenever the baby seems to be active, drinking something cold, and then seeing how long it takes to feel 10 movements.  If it's under 2 hours, she said I was good.  If not she suggested I call them back just to be sure and reassure myself (even though that could be normal too).  She did emphasize though that the strength of the movement does NOT matter, especially at this stage since the baby could just move to a position where it's harder for me to feel his movements.  She said to count any movement, no matter how small.

Maybe try a kick count and if you aren't feeling better about it after the result, call your OB or ER for reassurance.  If it's really getting to you though, I'd just call them now, especially if they have on-call docs or nurses who can talk to you.

Edit: I also wanted to add that it's two days later and I can feel more defined and frequent movements. For me it seemed like I could feel him well when he was in breach (pokes to the sides of my belly) but he must have moved to a more vertical position for a few days since most of what I felt then was faint and down low or up by my chest.  Hopefully you're little one is just in a hidden position and you'll feel them move soon!
  • I'm 21 w and still can't determine if it's movement or not. I haven't for sure felt kicks yet. I'm a bit bigger so think that may be playing a part but I'm sure your Baby is fine.
  • I'm 23.3 and the movement I feel is really inconsistent. Some days I barely feel anyth I ng. They are still so small and have a lot of room in our tummies right now. Try to relax.
