Advice or Tips for Bloating?

I'm. So. Bloated! Like painful, constant stomach bloating. It doesn't matter what I eat, when I eat, or how I eat. I'm so thankful for the few moments I have when I don't have any discomfort; it's that constant! Has anyone found something that eases or prevents this? Tips or advice??

Re: Advice or Tips for Bloating?

  • Can you clarify? Are you bloated in your tummy area? How far along are you? Or do you mean you're body swollen all over?

  • Stomach bloating from gas, I'm 21 weeks.
  • Oh ok hmmmm. I'm pretty sure that's your uterus and your baby at this point. I'm not sure why you think it's bloat. Maybe someone else can help answer this better. My opinion is I think it's not bloat and it's your baby. And maybe your just having round ligament pain or cramps? I could be wrong, since I'm not a doctor. Sorry I can't be of further help! Good luck!

My OB told me it was safe to take over the counter Simethicone during pregnancy at the regular dosage.  Ask a pharmacist when you go to the drug store or your OB to be sure since I'm not a doctor myself but it's in Mylanta Gas and Gas-X.  I've found it helps relieve the pressure during the worst days.  I had some minor GI issues before pregnancy (leading to more gas) and was also advised by my gastroenterologist to drink Kefir. It's basically a probiotic yogurt-ish drink and it seems to help reduce my gas somewhat although I'm not sure if that helps more because I have SIBO (bad bacteria in my small intestine) or would help you as well. It probably wouldn't hurt to try.  Worst case you get some extra calcium and protein.

Edit: This is the brand the GI doc recommended: https://lifewaykefir.com/  it's usually in the yogurt section of the grocery store.  I don't think it's the miracle they advertise it to be but it does seem to help reduce my symptoms a bit and tastes pretty good.
  • Getting moving increases gas movement. Whenever I get uncomfortable and bloated I go for a brisk walk with my dog, good for us both :)
I'm lactose intolerant and sometimes go a little overboard with dairy, because it's delicious, and have taken Gas-X before. It is helpful, but more so when you move well for a bit after taking it.

Also, if you can't walk after taking Gas-X for whatever reason or it doesn't work, lie on your left side for a bit. It's more conducive for air movement because of how the colon is shaped.

    Edited for typo
  • Try ginger - ginger beer, ginger tea, ginger candy. Lots of water helped me too... And remember better out than in ;)
  • It could be your prenatal vitamins. I was having the same problem with bloat. I was so uncomfortable and couldn't eat anything. I changed my prenatal vitamins and I feel so much better!
  • As someone that has always suffered from bloating, I know how you feel! And now that my belly is so stretched already from baby, when I am bloated it feels as if I'm going to explode! I take warm showers and go for walks. No medication has ever helped me. Papaya enzymes (by Swiss) helped prior to pregnancy but I read that it's not safe to take during pregnancy. Sometimes I just lay down and wait a couple hours for it to pass. I agree it is horrible though. Everything I eat makes me bloat. :(
  • Absolutely stay far away from anything carbonated.  And drink tons of water.  I don't do probiotics, but eating yogurt with 1-2 meals per day makes a difference for me.  Because your digestive tract slows down while you're pregnant, gas and gas pain can get much worse.  You need to make sure that you're regularly using the bathroom - otherwise, try adding more fiber into your diet along with the water (although this might make it temporarily worse before your body gets used to it).  Moving around should help get some of the pressure out too.  Good luck.  Mine has been pretty painful this pregnancy, but I've been able to make some significant improvements with diet.
  • I was thinking about a probiotic; thank you!
