Name same as friend's dad?

so DH and I both really like a boy name (we are team green so trying to get one or two names of both sex) but it's the same as his good friend's dad. I personally don't think it's a big deal, it's not like we would be naming the kid after him...and the friends dad goes by the full name and we most likely would call baby by the nickname anyways.

DH thinks it's kind of weird or is worried that his friend would think its weird. Trying to convince him it's not a big deal or weird! There aren't many names we both like so would love this one to work if we do have a boy. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Re: Name same as friend's dad?

  • I don't think it's a big deal, especially if it's a common name. Can you share the name so we can make a better judgement?

  • The name is Leon, and we would probably call him Leo.
  • I don't think that's a big deal at all. Could you just name him Leo?
  • @yl1m32015 we thought about that, but I think for a grown up man I like that he'd have the option to go by Leon. Kind of like how little boys may be called Tommy but then go by Tom or Thomas when they are older. And I also just really like "Leon" so may go between calling him Leo and Leon.

    Thanks for the input!
  • I don't think it's weird either. If anything, the dad should take it as a compliment.
  • I'm the oddball. I think it's a little weird lol!
  • I don't think it's weird, but I think Leo is great no matter age- it's a name that can grow with him.
  • Is the middle name the same too? If it's just the first I definitely don't see a problem.
  • Thanks all! I appreciate the input. @ACarter0914 hmmm not sure of the dad's middle name but THAT would be really weird if we happened to choose the same thing!
  • I think that out of the names we like best, we may somehow end up with a name that will be shared with someone we know. Not really into the obscure names, so it's kind of unavoidable! I don't think it's weird, it's a cute name... and agreeing on names can be hard!

FWIW, Leo is a perfect,y legit stand alone name, not a nickname. It was my great Gramdfathers name. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_(given_name)

I don't think this should matter at all! Now if it was his BFF's name that might be a little touchier. So if that's the name you like I'd go for it!
  • Think about it this way ...

If you nixed every friend's name, every friend's parents name, I'd assume every friend's sibling's name (if you care about parents you should care about siblings right?), you'd cut out a lot of really great names.

The only names that I think are off limits when considering names for your children are your direct sibling's kids (like I wouldn't pick the same name as my sister's kid), MAYBE your cousin's kids (if you're close to your cousins), and your best friends/their kids ... that's it.
  • Not a big deal IMHO. I would suggest casually mentioning it to your hubby's friend so he can get used to the idea, but I doubt he will care. The men I've talked to about baby names just aren't that intetested.
  • @kyleneum13 @RSB1982 thanks!

Yeah we have thought about mentioning it...we have been pretty "secretive" with our names after my lovely sister told us one of our girl names was a "stripper name" (the name was Ruby which IMO is NOT even near a "stripper" name! We have a tense relationship as I'm sure is apparent with that little anecdote, but that's another story ;) ... ) SO yeah maybe we will say something or just say whatever and go for it.

I really don't think it's a big deal and I'm sure over the next 5 months he will get used to it. Anyhoo, appreciate the feedback everyone!!

Uhhhh, Ruby is a fantastic name. Our best friend's daughter (2 years old) is Ruby and we LOVE it. We haven't told anyone our name ideas yet because we also don't want that kind of opinionated response.
  • @kyleneum13 YA thank you! It was just really weird. I LOVE the name Ruby. My sister is an odd one...and I think she said it just to hurt me soo whatever, Ruby is still on our short list for girls!
  • I found out yesterday that my SIL's sister has a son that is the same name we have chosen to name ours. Might be weird for her and my brother to have 2 nephews with the same name. I don't know that particular sister very well so it hasn't affected my name decision at all.
