Postpartum Hair Loss?

Has anyone else started to lose their hair? Yuck!!! I had heard that this is a common post partum side effect around the 3 month mark. Just curious if anyone else is dealing with this. I absolutely hate finding hair around my house and it's so gross when I brush it after I shower.

I have long hair and am seriously considering chopping it off. I donate my hair every 3 years and it's not quite long enough if I want to donate. Otherwise I'd be booking a haircut immediately. Anyone have any idea how long this lasts??

Re: Postpartum Hair Loss?

  • Yes!! My long curly hair was gorgeous during pregnancy and now it's falling out in gobs and I just had to cut 4 inches off. :(

  • Mine has been bad for the past few weeks and I am only 2 months pp. Dont tell me it's going to get worse at 3 months. Anyone know if Biotin helps?
  • Ugh! It's terrible. So annoying. I have long thick hair and if I didn't love ponytails And messy buns so much I would chop it off!!
  • Yes & im actually happy to lose some hair lol
  • Oh no!! I have the longest hair I've ever had haha, hopefully the hair loss isn't too bad (I haven't reached that point of post partum yet).
  • I have long hair and i barely have time to brush it, when i do brush i get a lot of hair stuck to the brush but idk if it's fallen hair that's been stuck in my bun or po affect, sorry if this is gross lol

I take prenatal vitamins and calcium they're supposed to help, any of you ladies taking them and still losing hair?
  • Awesome for you for the hair donations! Super cool
  • Yes!! I'm shedding like crazy... showers are the worst now... and LO gets my hair tangled in her fingers all the time now.
  • Mine started at the 2nd week and it's now week 12 and it falls out in huge chunks. I got about 5 inches chopped off and now wear it tied back. Cutting it helped some...I definitely don't feel super attractive with short hair but...hell...I'm not in the market anymore anyway so I don't care. Hah....sigh
  • Mine started getting really thin about 5 years ago. I started using Nioxin then & it stopped the loss and even made my hair appear thicker. Not sure if it works for postpartum hair loss, too, but may be worth a try. You can buy it at most salons.
  • I'm still taking prenatal vitamins and I'm shedding like crazy.

  • Agreed with PP. I'm taking prenatal vitamins and it's coming out in chunks when I brush it. I showed DH last night and we agreed I could built a birds nest with all this hair!!!!!!

A quick google search last night said it's very common for this to start at around month 3 and last from 6-12 months!!!!!!!!
  • Oh! And while reading on hair loss a lot of sites cautioned to keep an eye on LO. Because our hair is falling out its very easy for them to get a piece wrapped around a finger, arm, etc. It can be very worrisome if it gets wrapped too tight. I know I've found my hair wrapped in DS's fist. So keep an eye out for those hairs ladies!!! If your LO is fussy or upset for no real reason, be sure to check if a hair is wrapped around them somewhere!!!
  • Oh I forgot to add that I'm taking prenatal vitamins, biotin (10,000 mg/day), iron with OJ and using the entire nioxin line and nothing helped. :(
  • My hair has been falling out since I gave birth. It's all over the shower wall/drain hen I bathe and still comes out when I brush my hair afterwards. Luckily I have a ton of hair so I'm hoping this actually helps me, lol. I've also wondered if it has to do with the time of year, being summer and all. Or maybe just stress!
  • I recently cut off my long hair and donated it!   the short hair is soooooo much easier to deal with. i can go much longer without washing it, just spritz it with water and brush.  I was finding the long hairs in LO's fist, too!  Not a problem anymore!
  • After the massive shed some of it will grow back. With my first son I had to chop off my hair cb when I pulled it up I would have so much re growth falling out of my ponytail. I figured I might as well cut it and have it all grow out at the same time. I also had some crazy baby bangs at the time too.
