Baby Registry

Hi, everyone!!!!

I am feeling extremely overwhelmed with being a first time mom and what to put on my registry/what to buy. I have no idea where to even begin. Does anyone have any advice for me? Any websites that give good, honest reviews on must have products/furniture/cribs? Any recommendations on must haves and maybe things that you bought for your first baby but ended up not needing/using? Thanks for any advice that you can offer!

Re: Baby Registry

  • I know when I went to babies r us and target they both have us a helpful list. I would start there I guess.
  • Loading the player...
  • Yes target has a cheat sheet you c an go off of. I'm sure you cod even google "what to put on my baby registry" and it'd come up with lots of good lists.
  • Check out the website called "Lucie's list" and the book "baby bargains." Both are helpful with registry essentials and reviews on products.
  • I found a good check list on Pinterest of what to put on a baby registry. My DH and I have used the one I found and the one BRU gave us to create our own checklist :)
  • @aks2013 I am with ya. I am feeling a little overwhelmed too trying to figure out what to register for/buy. I've spent time on Pinterest looking at lists people have made. I find it funny when one person will post that sometime was a life savior; something they couldn't live without and the next post will say the same item was a huge waste of money.

I had a checkup this morning and when I was leaving I noticed there were a stack of BabiesRUs registry catalogs. I only spent a few minutes looking through it but it looks like it has some advice at helping select the right model. For example, it shows the different styles of carries and discusses the pros each type. (I just wish it also mentioned the cons). I grabbed a copy to look through later. Maybe it will be helpful.

    Good luck!

I think must haves really depend on your lifestyle. With DD, we never used a carrier, but now i may use one this time when at the store with a baby and toddler. Same goes for stroller, if you never go out anywhere, you don't need a stroller. We used it for the mall, zoo, and fair and that is about it. I will say I have a diaper champ instead of the diaper genie and when my sister had her second kid, she bought a champ instead of genie because they flip so you aren't cramming a dirty diaper in, and they use trash bags which are cheaper than the refills for the genie. That being said, I would have been fine using a trash can, but happened to find my diaper genie at a garage sale for 3 bucks. Birth cloths can be cute, but most are not that absorbent, we used Birdseye style of cloth diapers for burp cloths because they actually catch the mess. We got some at a garage sale that someone had sewn pretty cloth material onto the back of and some were dyed with ribbon accents, we got a lot of compliments on them. A must have for us was a rock n play. We wanted baby in our room, but our house was tiny, so a pack n play wouldn't fit. The rock n play was awesome and is perfect for a baby with reflux and so you can rock baby while half asleep instead of getting up and chancing dozing with baby in your arms on those long nights.

ETA: Burp cloths not birth cloths (what is that even? Lol) my phone won't let me go up and actually edit it though
  • Someone gave me the idea of starting an amazon registry and inviting second time mom's to add items they loved or couldn't live without. Perfect if you're a prime member and I love reviews on amazon.
  • I found Baby List  (babyli.st) very helpful--you can pick items, and it finds them at multiple stores, so your family can buy them wherever.  Also, you can add stuff that might not be on the typical big box store site, like a onesie from your favorite band's merch site.

  • Right there with ya! So overwhelmed that I have to stop after 15 minutes because I can feel the anxiety of it all getting to me. Target has a great checklist but its so much stuff and I have no idea of all these little things are necessary or not yet. I cant wait till LO is here so I can finally gauge all the little stuff I need and what I can do without.

  • I think it all comes down to your lifestyle and your creature comforts. When I registered for baby stuff with DS I registered for all of the practical things like sheets, meds, bottles, changing table pad, stroller, carseat. I don't think I put a single clothing item on my registry. Everyone wants to buy you baby clothes. Just be prepared to have more newborn outfits than your child will ever be able to wear. I got tons of things I didn't register for. Its hard to judge how much you are going to need/use something until the baby is actually here. I say register for all of the important things, things vital to the care of your baby, everything else is secondary and if you think you might use it, register for it anyway, its better to have and not need than need and not have. You can donate the things you don't use to a mother who may be in desperate need.

There are tons of things that you will end up going back and buying more of. I have 4 baby carriers all bought at different times when I realized I hated all the others that I had. Not all baby things are created equal and what works for some moms may not work for others. Its all going to be trial and error. Don't stress, I know it can be over whelming, but its not something that you will ever be able to judge until your're in the midst. FX for tons of gift cards, save them for when the baby is here and you realize that you are missing something, it will happen.

  • Thanks everyone!!! You all were very helpful!!
  • Lucie's List has a fantastic starting list. If you sign up for emails those are wonderful too. They send out a new topic each week and I found they ended up being pretty timely for a lot of milestones, etc. with my first!
  • Here's a list of things I couldn't live without (mind you I had twins so my opinion on "need" will probably vary)

    -car seat
    -stroller
    -crib
    -rock n play
-bumbo (we used as a high chair for about 4 months...on the floor of course)
-swing (that popular model that everyone had before mamaroos were invented)
    -different kind of binkies
    -different brands of diapers/wipes
    -different brands of bottles
(You'll probably want to trial all of these "different" items to see which baby likes best before you invest your money in 100 of the same bottle that baby hates)
    -ergo/Tula
-lots of pjs (my girls lived in pjs) especially ones that zip
    -pre made swaddle sleep sacks
    -pack n play
    -bath tub

    Things I found pointless
    -wipe warmer
    -bottle warmer
    -bouncer
-hand mittens (socks worked 1000xs better)
-special drying rack for bottle pieces
    -sterilizer (dishwasher worked fine)
    -dreft laundry detergent (...poison )
    -nursery water
-special changing table (changing pad on a dresser or the couch works great)
-glider (I could never rock two baby's at once and successfully get them in their bed once asleep) thought im sure I'll use it this time around.
-boppy pillow (much preferred pillows for nursing and a boppy sleep lounger for placing baby in)

    I know I'm forgetting stuff.
