High-Risk Pregnancy

Do your doctors believe in bed rest?

Apparently my new ones don't :-/

This is after my first son was born at 33 weeks.

And at 28 weeks with my second I started going into labor so I was given lots of magnesium and put on STRICT bed rest along with some other medication.  I wasn't even allowed to go to the kitchen or sit up. I was to lay on my side for 9 weeks until the baby came.  I went off bed rest at 37 weeks and went into full on labor 2 days later.  That alone has me convinced that bed rest worked in keeping that baby in.  I also had a lot of activity that whole time and made it to 4 cm by the end of bed rest.

My new doctors are telling me that there is no evidence to support that bed rest actually works and they really don't believe in it but if I really want to go on it they won't stop me.  I'm only 14 weeks so there isn't anything going on at this point but I'm getting kind of nervous about their approach.

Have your doctor's told you they don't believe in bed rest?

Re: Do your doctors believe in bed rest?

  • I had a friend whose doc also did not believe in bedrest for stopping labor, and at first she listened the labor continued she ended up back in the hospital and I told her to put herself on strict bed rest and she made it 6 more weeks.  I firmly believe in bed rest, I like you was in the hospital for a week to stop PTL and released onto strict bedrest.  The day I got out of bed was the day my son was born. I am not much farther along then you (15 weeks) but my doc and I are already having lots of conversations about how we need to try and stay ahead of the PTL we assume is coming.  I already plan to start modified activity after 26 weeks or so.  Good luck to you!

TTC#1 May 2009- July 2010 on our own with no luck

Started with RE in August 2010, dx with unexplained IF and then finally our 3rd IUI cycle using Follistim and Trigger resulted in our wonderful little man.  Born 12/2/11

TTC#2 Never really prevented, but were careful early on as Dr. reccomended

Surprise BFP 12/16/13, started progesterone immediately as first numbers came back low, but betas were good.  Progesterone wasnt enough. Natural MC 12/24/13.

Back with RE as of January 2014...

  • My new docs don't believe in bed rest either... Makes me a little nervous too... Ik was on bed rest from 29 weeks on with my first daughter because of PTL...
  • Mine does! And they're pretty strict about it!
  • Mine does. I'm high risk (previous pre-term labour and loss at almost 17 weeks) and have been put off work since 14 weeks. My OB started with just 2 weeks off, and then at my follow-up she said that no, I'm to be off until I deliver. My high risk OBs agree. While I'm not on strict bed rest, I'm limited in what I can do. I only really get out for appointments. I've already had a 2-day hospital stay where they kept me on bed rest and gave me indomethacin to prevent contractions as I had started bleeding. I'm 21 weeks on Thursday and have my anatomy scan tomorrow. I'm hoping to get a bit more freedom, but will do what the OBs think is best.

One of my friends was on strict bed rest from 18 weeks on as she was dilated and cervix was very short at 1.8. She had 4 separate hospital stays, steroid injections, and prometrium. She just delivered yesterday at 39w1d :) She credits having held on that long to modified and strict bed rest and prometrium. Both of which I've been doing since 14 weeks.
  • My doctor does not. I had a cerclage put in at 8 weeks ago and was back at work in the OR a week later doing pretty much everything I did before including moving patients to crawling under OR tables to intubating patients. He also said the newer studies have shown no clinical evidence to support bed rest.
