Glider Next to My Bed for 2nd Baby Due November?

So I have a 2 year old who sleeps in his own room in a convertible crib. We haven't even converted it yet since he has a tendency to be awake intermittently at night and moves EVERY which way in his sleep. Keeping the bars up seems safest yet and gives me the most peace of mind. That said, when this baby boy arrives in 3 months I fully expect him to spend way more time sleeping in my room than my older one did. There's no way they could be in the same room! He'll be with me for longer I'm sure.

I have a pack in play i used before. But I'd really like something I can place right next to my bed and that has some kind of soothing movement. I'm thinking a glider. Does anyone else let their baby actually sleep in a glider overnight??? How has that worked for you? What brand/model? Is that safe? My husband was crazy stressed about the swing we had for our first and worried he wasn't reclined enough to breath. He stressed me out!

  • I'm all for it! Thank you for the suggestion. Do you feel like its the incline that makes the glider unsafe? Just curious.
  • When you say "glider" I picture a rocking chair type thing and I can't imagine anyone having a baby sleep on that. I guess I'm not understanding what you consider a glider.

I used a Rock n Play (pictured above) for my second child and it was amazing. Babies usually hate sleeping flat so the RnP was perfect for her. Your husband is right in al way. Experts don't recommend using swings, RnP's or similar items for long periods of sleep but I was comfortable having my DD in there. Car seats are especially unsafe for sleep because the airway can get cut off.

  • I'm assuming by glider she means one of those gliding baby swings after thinking about it. Which to me is just as safe as a rock and play or something similar. However that is my recommended for overnight sleeping anyway. Read up on the risks. Not sure if it has something to do with the batteries, shaking, incline etc. I plan to use a flat regular bassinet for overnight sleeping. But would do a swing or bouncer for supervised naps.
  • I've read you should limit sleeping time in the swing to just naps due to the angle it puts their head.

You can get a small bassinet for like $100 at target - we got a precious plain white one with a hood and mobile and it's perfect for right by the bed. You're supposed to transition them out of that and into a crib once they can roll over.

They also make pack-and plays with a newborn napper attachment if that's an option for you. They're pretty large though.
  • Look for one of the things people are suggesting here or a Moses basket, and look for them at a consignment store or on craigslist. All these things that babies use for such a short time, buying used is the way to go!

Yes I bought a white bassinet barely used from a girl in my town through our local FB page. Since it will only be used for 2 months or so why not. Washed the sheets and will go in our room within arms reach of bed. The pack and play with napper/bassinet option is good to since most people get one of those anyway. I'll have that in the living room downstairs along with the swing.

  • I second the rock n play. My youngest loved his and always slept best in it if he wasn't in our bed. Definitely came in very handy and we got a lot of use out of it.
  • It has been a while but I think swings and gliders, etc are not safe for prolonged periods. We used a bassinet for our first babe in the first few months. Bassinets are small enough where they can be right by the bed.
