I had 3 reg nursing bras, about 4 of the tanks, but really I lived in my nursing sleep bra from bamboobies....so comfy,im even wearing them most the time now.
I usually get about 7 or 8 regular nursing bras. I also had probably 4 that were expensive, sexy ones from Cake Lingerie - let's face it, regular nursing bras are not going to stir anything up in the bedroom and a year is a long time... . I breastfed my son for a year and a half and those held up until we were done. Nursing tanks... I had probably 15. I got black white and tan at the store ( 2 of each) and then bought some white ones and dyed them. When you nurse that long, you want to have some color options and be able to match it to all of your clothes.
It depends on your budget and your lifestyle. At $40-50+ each for nursing bras in my size, I can't afford to buy more than 2, maybe 3 nursing bras. I would have at least 2, one to wash and one to wear.
As for tanks, you can get by with regular camisoles or tank tops layered under a low-necked or wrap-style shirt, or you may prefer nursing tanks. I plan to buy a couple nursing tanks just to have some options, but again this isn't something I can afford to buy a lot of.

I don't get why you would need 15 tanks unless you never do laundry!! I wear the same 3-4 regular bras so I don't foresee needing more than that of nursing!
I bought 5 bras off zulily.com for $60 and I got 2 nursing tank tops because a lot of shirts I wear are low cut anyway so that my tattoo shows. I'm not going to buy anymore. I did find some cute lacey nursing bras though for super cheap!
I nursed my son for 14 months and had 3 sleep nursing bras (from target- loved them!) and a couple regular. I usually rotate a couple regular bras anyway, so that carried over to nursing. I didn't have any tanks and I will this time. Prob not for under everything for a year (too many layers), but def for around the house, esp in the beginning.
I just bought 3 nursing tanks and 3 nursing bras (no wire). I figure this should get me through my maternity leave since I'll be hanging at home mostly.
I have gotten 4 nursing tanks, 4 nursing bras, 2 sleep nursing bras and a nursing sports bra for more support if I don't want to wear a regular nursing bra. I love the brand Gilligan and O'Malley from target they are very comfortable and affordable and cute not frumpy looking. I also bought Jessica Simpson nursing bras a little more pricey but good quality and comfortable.
I bought 3 nursing tanks + 1 maternity bra at Kmart for 20$ all up. I presume I won't need too many more than that, so long as I do regular loads of wash. But, we'll see! I'm a totally neurotic and terrified FTM. I'm certain I will never totally be prepared for anything.
A little off topic but my friend who just gave birth suggested I wait till my milk comes in to buy nursing bras because she had bought them while still pregnant not realizing her breasts would grow so much and suffered a clogged duct and eventually mastitis (her doctor mentioned having a bra too snug could have an effect). Her breasts were just way bigger than she had anticipated them being! Even if it doesn't cause a problem that serious, I would still be uncomfortable wearing a bra that was too snug

I've been wondering about this. I just bought two bras at Destination Maternity because I couldn't stand it anymore, and I still have a full ten weeks to go. I almost went nuts and bought 4 or 5 because they had a good deal, but I'm sure my size will change again.
I may load up on stretchy sleep bras or tanks during tax free weekend, though. I have a feeling the L-XL range will be a safe bet for me...
I am doing the same as a PP and waiting to buy "good" nursing bras (the kind you'd wear out/to work, that have actual cups) until my milk comes in because who knows what size I'll be. For now, between me and my mom buying, I have 2 sleep bras and 3 soft nursing bras that come S-M-L. Zulily was having a GREAT sale and I couldn't pass it up. I plan on wearing some of them now because most of my regular bras are getting super uncomfortable. I highly recommend the brand Coobie. Very comfortable and cute. They are not like regular nursing bras with slings; the whole front comes down on each side. But they seem like they will work well both as a comfy maternity bra and a casual nursing bra.
Some places recommend getting fitted for a nursing bra 3 weeks before your due date. It certainly doesn't hurt to wait till your milk comes in to invest in a lot bras, but it also doesn't hurt to buy something that fits NOW if you need to.
In my personal experience, my boobs were HUGE when my milk first came in, but around 6 months PP, I needed new bras. Except one nursing bra which finally fit when I wasn't "full." Fortunately, nursing bras are designed for breasts that fluctuate in size throughout the day.
My mother in law said she got by with getting regular bras in her side that clasped in the front instead of nursing bras. She said they were easy to find on sale in the brands and styles she regularly wore so they could be worn after nursing
