Missed twin?? Or am I going crazy? ;)

Happy Thursday, all! So I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks and doctor said only one baby. I've been picking up HR since 8 weeks with my home doppler. I'm 14w 3d now. I'm very good at distinguishing baby from my own heartbeat and placenta. For the last week I've been hearing what sounded like an echo or a faint extra beat in the HR. Over the last few days I have been picking up the baby's HR in multiple spots. My husband and I joked that maybe there are twins, but now I'm really wondering! Twins do run in my family. Last night I picked up HR on left side of uterus, nothing in the mid section and then HR on right side of uterus. I even slid back over to left to confirm baby was still there and hadn't moved to the other side. Anyone else experiencing anything similar?

  • I have not, but that would be a fun surprise!

I have found that my baby moves a lot while I'm getting the Doppler. So I may get it on one side then lose it, then a few minutes later find it again on the other side, then again find it on the other side. I also find my own heartbeat on both sides of my uterus. If US indicated it's a singleton, I'd trust that.

That's what I was thinking as well, but a good ol' internet search came up with instances of missing a twin in early US, especially 6 weeks and prior. Plus, my doctor used this dinosaur of a machine that sits in his office mainly to locate the HR and ease my mind. I haven't seen the US tech yet. Most likely there's just one little mover in there and I'm picking up echos
  • I have a friend that had a missed twin experience. They only saw one at the first ultrasound, then there were two at the next! There's a good chance it's just one in there, but don't rule out the possibility! :)

    Huh! Could be!
  • A girl on my first bmb didn't find out she was having twins until a 16 or 17 week ultrasound. I have no experience with a Doppler but I'd trust your first ultrasound until they tell you otherwise, but it's possible that the first scan may have missed one.
  • At my ultrasound at 6 weeks, the tech told me it was too early to tell if it was twins because all you could see was the yolk sac. Could be possible?

I could make out spine and head of baby and see heart beating. These pics aren't the best. I think at my appointment next week I will ask my doc, even though he may think I'm crazy. Lol.
  • I've also heard if it's very early they could miss the second sac. But if they already saw the fetal pole and heartbeat, it shouldn't have been that tiny to miss a second one, right?

I am having twins. They are in separate sacs but very much squished in the same location, not one on one side of my abdomen and the other on the other side. I'm 13wks 1d and using my Doppler they are always very close together and sometimes indistinguishable. My guess is you've only got one, but only your next ultrasound will tell you for sure!

My aunt's Dr didn't realize she was carrying twins until the anatomy scan! You never know lol
  • I had twins with my last pregnancy and it just didn't work like that with the doppler. The heartbeats were in the same area, not across my body.....if that makes any sense. And when she would use it, it was really hard to actually distinguish 2 heartbeats. I had tons of appointments because I was very high risk and I was never able to figure out how she heard 2.

While there is always a chance of having twins, I bet there's just one. My identical twins were pretty clear at my 6 week ultrasound. And if they were wondering about a yolk sac or any additional gestational sac they would have mentioned it
  • I had twins in 2011.  At my first ultrasound, 5 weeks, they only saw one.  At my second one, 7.5 weeks, they saw two.  If you ARE having twins, they are probably identical to have been missed at 6 weeks but chances are it's just one.  Random but I could never get both heartbeats on a doppler when I was pregnant.  I could only find one.
