  • @smlowe9311, I can relate! As we've discussed before, our kids are acoyt the same age. At our house, it's "Nemo" or "Monster" (monster's inc), or "Dino's Train" (Dinosaur Train). I've also seen the Pixar short "Mater and the Ghostlight" at least 300 times as well as "Elmo's Potty Time." No binge-watching my own shows anymore.
Sometimes I miss the days of laying out by the pool flipping through a gossip rag and sleeping till 11. But I LOVE my son any wouldn't trade him for the world.

@J1D, I agree with you. I think people probably ought to educate themselves about the issues and get out there and vote accordingly, but the ignorance of many people is startling. Honestly, I only vote in presidential elections, because I don't feel like I'm qualified to vote the rest of the time since I don't know all the issues well enough . . . And I've not even voted in every election, though not always by choice.

Anyone backing Donald Trump has me shaking my head in disbelief. Especially one friend of mine who is Mexican. Um, you're part of the exact group that Trump expressed disdain for and you want to vote for him? WTF?

This is potentially a UO: I don't trust either side of the story regarding the whole Planned Parenthood and selling fetal remains thing. It's not like it's any secret that PP is a major provider of abortions, and who's to say a few corrupt doctors decided to try to make a profit selling the fetal remains? But I also think the pro-life side has blown this story way out of proportion to make it look like PP exists primarily for the purpose of performing abortions to harvest fetal body parts.

    And my official UO:

I didn't think the glucose test was that bad. The Glucola tasted like watery orange Gatorade to me. It didn't make me sick (probably a telling sign that there's way too much sugar in my diet). I didn't even mind waiting an hour at the doctor, between making a couple phone calls, working on my cross stitching and going on TB, the time passed quickly. Even getting my blood drawn wasn't too bad. Don't throw things at me.

But then I decided my post GD test snack would be a junky carb-fest which consisted of sweet and salty popcorn and Starburst. That made me feel yucky.

  • I agree with all of this. I've given up on trying to explain my reasons for being pro-choice to most family members. They can't fathom after my miscarriages how I could possibly be okay with killing innocent little babies. *eye roll*

My biggest gripe with this mentality is that the same people who are against "killing innocent babies" are usually the same ones who lose their shit if they are asked to help pay for them in anyway. Their lives are only worthy in utero - too bad if their momma's are poor and hungry once they are born.

    AMEN!!!!

@J1D During the first Obama election I had to explain to someone I worked with that you couldn't vote for both Obama and Sarah Palin. She kept saying "but I want a woman and a black man in the White House" If you don't understand how voting works and know anything about the issues you shouldn't be allowed to vote.
    Oh, lawd.

Please tell me she was actually 12 years old and not an adult.

  • @MariahOBrien @J1D I KNOW. I have a few people I am friends with on Facebook that incessantly post about PP and every time they do I want to post something snarky and actually educated. But I don't want to open that can of worms. That's why i love the ignore button. Which brings me to something else I hate. I hate when people post attention grabby shit on Facebook like "she put a stick up her butt and you won't BELIEVE what happened next!" It pisses me off so much that I just want to slap them all! I ALSO hate when people post stuff of Facebook that is clearly offensive and then try to justify it by saying "this is so offensive why would someone do this blah blah blah" dude, if it's THAT terrible DONT POST IT. like what's the point!? You are just spreading the vile further. If it's that offensive then report it and let it be. It's counter productive to then post it. I can't even.

THIS!! I hate going on Facebook and the SAME people repost abused animals, starved animals, a woman throwing puppies into a river WTF!!?? and then "justify" by "why would anyone do this" or for "awareness." How about you STOP spreading it. Ugh, I hate logging in and the first thing I see is a half dead, beaten dog with some bull about "how can anyone do this. But this dog lived" Ok- Lets not show the healthy dog, lets show the dog dying for more clicks. It's infuriating and I get very snippy on people who post this on FB.

Yeah sorry I'm using your tax dollars to pay for the food I feed the kids I didn't use your tax dollars to abort . . .

My UO- I don't think everyone should vote. I'll even go so far as to say I don't think everyone should have the right to vote. (I can already feel the flames...) I say this based on I know people who go to the polls and literally, I am not making this up "vote for someone who doesn't sound Mexican." o_0 !!!! This is someone who shouldn't vote! She doesn't know the issues, she doesn't know the people, she just votes for someone who "doesn't sound Mexican." I also know people who say they vote on every single issue cause it's "their duty as an American," even if they don't know what the issue is about and they vote the way "the cute little kids out side with the pamphlets" said to vote. Again, not making that up, I was really told this, for realz, in real life.
I think people should have to pass a test, or serve in the armed forces or as a civil servant or something to prove they are actually interested in putting some kind of effort into researching what they are voting on and aren't just checking off boxes at random.

I totally agree! I have never voted (I am 27) because I know that I have not done the research to have an educated vote. I know I should be more proactive about this but politics are not my thing! I just wish there were more people like me who would just avoid the polls if they don't know who they are voting for!

I agree with you 100%. I don't like to share a lot on FB for that reason. Unless it's for a good cause. But I agree that there are times that the sharing and click bait is terrible. Especially on this abortion nonsense or on false information about vaccines. I am pro-choice but my family would never understand that so I don't tell them. I would never have an abortion, but I could never expect a woman to give up 40 weeks of her life for a child that she doesn't want to carry. It's her choice.

The worst I've seen (and this really ticked me off) was when there were so many click bait titles on the Michael Brown shooting (this weekend is the anniversary by the way). I live in St. Louis. The city was very much on edge between August and November. We desperately wanted a verdict because rioters and looters were tearing up the city and people were afraid to go out. When articles started floating around FB saying verdict reached or Darren Wilson arrested people just saw the titles and spread the word without actually reading the article. I ended up ignoring all of it. I plan on avoiding FB for that reason this weekend. Not to mention if the protesters become violent again, I'd rather see it on the news. I'm glad to see that issues are finally being addressed in that community, but it was a really terrible time for St. Louis and the media who are responsible for our click bait articles handled it so terribly that I think in some parts they actually made it worse. Sorry that's my UO for the week.

@vamomtobe I'm with you on wanting everyone to be able to vote. I too get oddly emotional about the whole process which is why I get so angry with how the lack of inquiry and the education of oneself has brought our country to the point it is at. I am a hardcore Jeffersonian (Hamilton and the republic pushers would be more the pro-Federalist, certain qualifications to vote side as far as the ideas on which our country was formed), which I'm pretty sure means I'm a ridiculously naive optimist at heart, as like Jefferson, I believe that everyone, if given the opportunity to learn, can add value to our country. It's the different backgrounds and experiences that make this country so great.

I actually understand not always voting given the options recently. I've had very mixed feelings over the last couple of elections. But @MrsFaust1432 please don't feel like "politics" is some exclusive club of excessive info gathering and understanding every tiny inner-working of our country's system. I think the most important thing knowing that first, it isn't a hobby so much as a lifestyle, just like etiquettes ;) . Something that affects all of us deeply. And while it's a flawed system, everyday voices are as valuable as the crazy lobbyists buying congressmen. In fact it's more and more of those voices that combat political corruption. Knowing the things that shape our nation has an incredible effect on everything from what kind of education our children will receive (lookin' at you Texas and the conservatives who just reshaped AP test standards!), to how we access healthcare. Please don't be daunted or discouraged from learning!
  • @intheversa I have the same feeling about FB this weekend- I'm in St. Louis, too. What really irks me is how the situation looked on other news stations. I had family in Nevada and Cali calling me, asking if the city was burning down. It's terribly sensationalized sometimes (click bait doesn't help there!) and makes a bad situation even worse. My boss made the joke that the CNN coverage for Baltimore looked exactly like the coverage from Ferguson, just a different map.

My UO: I hate the disgusting videos people post on FB. I don't really care to see vomit or blood on my newsfeed. Someone posted a home video of a doe giving birth. While birth is wonderful, it's still GROSS. I've seen plenty of farm animals being born- grew up on a cattle farm- and guess what? Very messy. Some of us are squeamish and the auto-play video feature doesn't let me scroll past it fast enough!
  • Not to AW (much) but I just learned of an opinion that's very unpopular with me . . . I failed my glucose test!

I had 153 after 11.5 hours of fasting and the cut-off was 130. My doctor's first suggested I come in for the 3-hour test, but I asked if I could just skip it and start modifying my diet and testing my blood sugar. They said yeah that's Ok, so I'm going in Monday for some diabetic teaching and to get my glucometer.

This is unpopular for me because this weekend is my FIL's 60th birthday and I have to watch my carbs at my IL's house!!!! They cook such good food but it's all high carbs! And there's pumpkin ice cream in the freezer DH just bought and I can't eat it. Not yo mention that meat is way more expensive than carb-heavy foods like pasta.

    Ok. End rant.

Carry on, I'm enjoying the insightful political discussion. :-)
