Trying to Sleep on stomach

My daughter is 3 months and for the past week she has started to roll over to her tummy and also to be back on her back... But For the past two days she's doing it while she's sleeping and she fights when I put her back on her back... Is this normal? Any advice to what to do? I'm happy she's rolling over BUT i don't want her doing it in her sleep because of the risk of SIDS

ANY ADVICE WOULD HELP!
Thanks.

Re: Trying to Sleep on stomach

  • No personal experience but I've heard of people rolling towels and putting them around LO in their crib so that they can't roll over in their sleep. It would need to be low so as to not put them at risk of burying their face in it, but just a little lip that would make it difficult for them to roll. If your LO plays with the towels instead of sleeping, I've heard to put them under the sheet so it creates a bump but isn't actually out in the open for LO to play with.

Hope that makes sense. It's 3am so my brain isn't quite functioning.

Just a suggestion. Like I said I have no actual experience with this. Good luck!

  • Thank you I will give that a try!
  • I once saw a sleeping mat that you put in lo in and it has pillow on both sides so they cant roll, i saw it before getting pregnant and now i cant find it anywhere! It would be safer than rolling towels but if i don't find it i'll be doing that when lo starts rolling at night
  • I think if they can roll both ways then it's safe to let them sleep on their tummies. If you add things into the crib, it can actually increase the risk of SIDS.

I definitely understand your concern, but if she's rolling both ways, her neck muscles are strong enough that she should be safe!
  • Always put them down on their back, but once they can roll on their own, let them be.
  • Oh wow! Yes. Sorry. Like I said my brain wasn't functioning. If your LO can roll both ways then I wouldn't add anything to prevent them.

The method I suggested I've seen used for LO's who roll back to tummy and then can't roll back on their own and cry/scream until mom rolls them back.

My apologies! It didn't click that your LO is rolling both ways. I agree with others who have said to just leave LO.
  • Okay thank you all! She's does like to bury her head also but she's does eventually move it I just freak out when she takes a while to do it...

Yes, this. Once they can roll on their own, they should not have anything in the crib with them, including sleep positioners, and they should no longer be swaddled.
  • Your LO must be very strong!!!!! We can only roll one way over here :)
  • Yeah she is she was holding her head up with out being a bobble head at 2 and a half weeks
  • Thank you! Very helpful :)
  • I went through this same exact thing! Called the ped a gazillon times too! They told me that once they can roll over on their own you can't do too much. Also if they are strong enough to roll over they have good head control and can move their head if they get into trouble. Also they are developmentally advanced enough that the risk of sids decreases dramatically. Don't worry momma!!!
