28 Weeks & Measuring Small

Im currently 28 weeks and measuring small. A little more than 25 cm. My doctor had me schedule an ultrasound for my next visit but I couldn't wait 3 weeks. He said I could get one earlier if I wanted. I have a Level II ultrasound scheduled for next Wednesday at the hospital. I'm freaking out that there is something wrong with our baby girl. There were no indications that there was something wrong at our 20 week gender ultrasound. I'm a worrier and I can't stop thinking there is something wrong with her. Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: 28 Weeks & Measuring Small

  • Have you been laying in the same position everything they are measuring. Last week I was laying lost of the way back but not flat and it was 26cm but when she laid me flat and checked again it was measuring 30cm,which is right on track. This may not be the case with out, but it could be something as simple as accuracy. Good luck. Hope everything goes well.

  • I was measuring a week behind at my 24-week appointment and my OB mentioned that we should do an u/s at the 28-week appt. if that was still the case. I went in for week 28 and baby boy was back on track. I was a little nervous, too, but I knew that our 20-week u/s was really good, and it sounds like yours was, too, so try not to worry yourself into a negative space. They will figure it out and it will be okay! I wish you luck!

Have you had the same person measure each time? I know in my doctor's practice there are 3 doctors and 3 nurse practitioners. I wonder if a different person was measuring they might have measure differently.

    Edit: wrong punctuation.
  • Try your best not to worry. Throughout my last pregnancy I measured small-between 2 and 3 cm behind. Measuring the uterus isn't a cut and dry indicator on the size of your baby, it's only a general guideline. Your baby may be a perfectly healthy peanut (mine was, she was born 6lbs 14 oz and now she's almost two and in the 55th and 80th percentile for weight and height respectively) or your baby could be perfectly average height and weight right now.

Your anatomy scans all came back normal right? All the more reason to assume baby is doing just fine. Good luck :)

Fundal height measurement is not an exact science and sometimes how the baby is lying, if your bladder is full, who is doing the reading and a number of other factors can affect the measurement. I have been measuring small by 2-3 centimeters since they started taking the measurement, but when I had an ultrasound at 26/27 weeks the baby was measuring in the 65th percentile and everything was just fine.

As best you can try not to let your mind keep cycling to the scary "what-ifs," instead take heart in the little swishes, kicks and flutters you're feeling. Chances are everything is just fine.

  • Yes a month ago I was on track and then my 28 week apt I measured 25. My midwives aren't concerned. I'll go in for my next apt in two weeks and see what's up then and ask them a little more about it. I try not to worry unless my Care providers are worried.
  • Thank you ladies so much! At my doctor's practice, he is the only one and the only one to measure me. My doctor and ultrasound tech said everything looked great at our 20 week gender scan. I'm also 5'6" and weighed 120 pre-pregnancy. I'm all torso too. It is just so hard not to worry...
  • Good luck!  I always measured small with my first pregnancy.  My daughter was born tiny but healthy @ 39 weeks.  Try not to worry too much.

Okay this concerns me, what are they measuring? I basically go in - OB asks "any questions this week?" she then looks at my bump from across the room and says "okay we'll see you in a month!"

So everyone else sounds like they get a lot more information at their OB appt's

Some ladies were even saying they know how much baby weighs? What?

Do I have the worlds laziest OB?  Like my appointments are less than 10 min long each time. I want more info! I have had one ulta sound at 20 weeks. and they didn't tell us anything during that except that shes a girl... is that normal? I'm 28 weeks now.

So sorry to hijack your post - but what the heck!
  • I'm a little small too for 28 weeks baby is growing and measurements are fine, but I have a feeling I'm not going to be so lucky the next couple of weeks tho....lol!!! We will see :-?

That's what my regular OB does too. But at the 20 week scan with maternal fetal scare is where they told me baby measuring and weighing on small side. They didn't tell me specific measurements but said I will come back for a growth check US in 4 weeks. So, point being you had nothing off so no reason to get into measurement details or do another US.

OP- I will be 28 weeks on Friday. When I went for my 24 week growth scan baby was still measuring on small side. More the head and overall weight than mentioning height. They did extra genetic tests and everything is normal, so now they are just monitoring my cord blood flow weekly to make sure baby is still getting what it needs. Then every other week they will weigh and measure. At 26 weeks still was measuring under 10th percentile at 1lb 12 oz. but baby gained enough weight and cord blood flow is perfect so so far no concerns and they are just considering baby small. Will see next week hopefully will continue to just keep growing and may be smaller at birth. If you are under 10th percentile it is called IUGR and you should be monitored at least biweekly. If not below that I wouldn't worry. They would have let you know. If you are head over to the high risk board. Some good info!

This has been my experience also, except for my last appointment, the 28 week appointment, my midwife measured for the first time.

This is normal. I'm 31 weeks and this is now what mine consist of. I've had around 5 ultrasounds because of issues, which is probably the case with most these ladies. You won't get anymore if there aren't any complications. It isn't necessary.
  • Like others have said- try not worry.
I always measure small. My first baby was 6lbs 9 oz and my second was 8lbs 2 oz. With this baby I had one measurement so far and one us because of it. Baby is 50% and looks great.
For reference- I am about 5'7 and 115lbs non pregnant. I have a long torso so my kids just stretch out in there, usually side ways which doesn't help with the measurements.

That's normal. That is pretty much how my appointments are. I'm now 28 weeks and they started measuring my belly (fundal height, I believe) now that I am showing more. We only found out the weight of the baby at 24 weeks at a level 2 ultrasound because the tech told us. Other than that, my appointments are pretty boring. Which is good!
  • I am 28 weeks and also measuring at 25 weeks. My OB wasn't concerned at all she says says I'm gaining the right amount of weight. I have an US tomorrow to see how my little man is growing.
  • Just wanted to post in here and let you all know that we had our US yesterday and baby is weighing 3 lbs 6 oz and in the 64 percentile. Her measurements looked great and the dr had no concerns. It was such a huge relief to see her and hear that. It had been a really long and stressful 10 days waiting to see her again. Thank you again for posting and relieving some of the stress that me and my husband had!
