Bradley Method

I wanted to know if any moms had any experience with taking the Bradley Method birthing class. I'm a stm but didn't feel like the regular hospital class prepared me well in relaxation and breathing techniques. I know it's expensive ($300) so I just want to know if it's worth it.

  • I did the class with #1. Most of it was great and I sometimes get hubby to use the relaxation techniques now when I have insomnia. Some of the class was also a bit hippy dippy for us but was still SO worthwhile.
  • Totally worth it, it really prepares you! My husband loved them also and was able to understand much better what all he could do to help me go through the pain without pain meds. He was my rock, without those classes I don't think he would have known how to help at all

  • Following to read others experiences. I have been trying to talk myself up to possibly try an unmedicated birth… we will see.

  • Did Bradley with my first and had a successful unmedicated birth! I thought it helped my husband and I get closer, too, and we both felt very prepared and confident at each stage of labor. It is great to educate yourself! I will say, though, that I had textbook labor and delivery, and two gals from my Bradley class, who had labor complications both ended up getting epidurals. It was worth the money for us.
  • Thanks ladies. A lot of the reasons why you liked it are why I want to take it. Just have to confince DH it's worth the money. But hey if you spend that much on hunting licenses every year this is worth it way more...imo
  • I didn't take the classes but read the Bradley method book and Ina mays guide to childbirth as my birth bibles and they were wonderful. I had two med-free births that were successful. I definitely would recommend both those books. Don't think the class is necessary unless you really want to go.

Your comment about you and your husband getting closer is one reason why I want to try it now (I have been reading up these last few hours) I can imagine the new bond you have with your SO after doing something like this together. I feel it would help how one feels about their self too, trusting in their body and feeling more confident as a woman? Seems like an all around good idea to me. There is only one class near us that they havnt set up dates yet but I'll be stalking to website. Thanks for posting this OP!

  • I will just put this out there, since it sounds like money might be a point of contention. Bradley is great, works great for many many people. I had a wonderful NUCB with the hypnobabies home study. The program was developed by a former Bradley instructor, and she incorporates that knowledge along with the self-hypnosis. This is not a "HB is better than Bradley" post at all, but I just thought I would mention it as the HB home study is $100ish, and might be a compromise if you and your husband just cannot agree on the $300+. Best of luck!

  • I took the Bradley classes when I was pregnant with my second and the classes were amazing. It really sets you up for a healthy pregnancy in general. I ended up with RCS. I have really bad anxiety and it helped me learn how to just relax. Plus it gives you a lot of information on healthy eating and just over-all well being. And as others have said it really gets your husband involved in your pregnancy and what you are and will be going through. and my instructor was amazing! I only paid $150 for my class though if I remember right. It was 4 years ago though so I could be wrong; but we have always been pretty broke so I don't think I would have been able to do $300...although knowing wht I know I would have gladly paid the $300 and if I can swing it, might take the class again.

I have bad anxiety too so that's great to know it helped you relax.
