Ultrasounds..?

I keep hearing/reading about everyone getting ultrasounds and it makes me worry about my prenatal care. I had one ultrasound around 10 weeks and my last was at 18 weeks. During the last I asked when my next would be and was told I wouldn't be getting another one unless there were some complications. Based on others experiences, is that normal?? I know I can pay to have one but I just worry... People are mentioning the baby's weight/measurements based on US but this hasn't been a conversation during my appointments at all! I'm 30w4d. My OB told me she would start "checking the poisition" of the baby during my next appointment and thereafter... But that's all! She takes out the tape measure and measures my uterus and then listens to the heart beat and that's what my appointments consist of (and me asking questions of course). Does this seem normal?? Am I only concerned because I'm a FTM and feel left in the dark?!

Re: Ultrasounds..?

  • It's normal! I had one at 8, one at 12 and one at 20. I also won't have another unless there is a concern.

  • Completely normal! The only reason I had an additional one was because I had low lying placenta and they had to check to make sure it moved to clear me for vaginal birth.
  • Good to hear ladies! I felt neglected! Haha guess not though!
  • I agree with PP - completely normal. I had one other, but only because my baby didn't cooperate at our 2nd ultrasound and they couldn't get all the pictures they needed.

My Dr doesn't even formally measure my belly. Just feels for the fundal height, checks bp, checks my weight, checks baby's heartbeat and sends me on my way.
  • It's totally normal unless you are high risk or have other complications. I asked the same thing though. I'd love to see our baby boy again but not if it means complications.

They don't want to do ultrasounds unless they feel it's necessary. High risk pregnancies have more. I only had 2.
  • I had one at 12 for dating, and 20 for my a/s. I won't have another unless there is a reason or I pay for an elective.

  • That's completely normal. That's how all of my appointments have been. I have one at 10 weeks and one at 19 weeks. I got one today at 29 weeks as a growth scan because I haven't been gaining weight as fast as the doctor wants me to.
  • Yep like PP's have said totally normal. I won't have another unless there is a problem. Also with dd1 I had a lot of ladies on her BMB tell us that the weight based on ultrasounds wasn't very accurate. Maybe this has changed in 2 years IDK but that's what had been their experience/research.
  • My doctor generally does one at 8w to date the pregnancy and one at 20w for anatomy, no more unless needed. I think I've had 5 but I'm having twins so they want to check on them more often.
  • Totally normal! I keep telling myself to be happy I don't get anymore because that means no complications!

Plus, as @smlowe9311 said, weight measurements are super duper inaccurate in third trimester. In fact, inaccurate measures often lead to unnecessary inductions or c-sections.
  • Completely normal! I've had around 5, due to my hypertension and then not being able to get clear images of her heart and lungs. All is good now and I won't be getting anymore. Most women will get 2-3 with a no risk pregnancy, just depends. I might pay to get one of those cool 3D ones though, I'd love to see her sweet little face! :)
  • It's normal. With my first I had one at 18 weeks and had to go back at 20 weeks cause they couldn't get the proper measurements. But if they did get them I would of only had 1 ! With this pregnancy I had one at 8.5 weeks due to pain and bleeding and one at 12 due to pain and bleeding, an elective sex scan at 18w2d because they won't tell us the sex of the baby here and then my anatomy scan at 20 weeks. I may have one more because my dr wants to keep an eye on the baby's size because my previous son was big and I had complications !

  • I only had one at 20 weeks for the anatomy scan. That's all. Totally normal!
  • Sounds completely normal. I only earn another ultrasound because I hide babies in my long torso and my uterus measures small.
  • What the previous posters said! Totally normal. I got a dating scan at 13 weeks and the anatomy scan at 20. We had one extra at 24 weeks because they found a soft marker at our anatomy scan. If they hadn't found that, we would have only had the two. Some people only get one, the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. In this case, less scans is a good thing.
  • Agreed this is how my appointments go. :) just means your baby is healthy and there's nothing to worry about! ;)
  • Your experience is exactly like mine. I had an ultrasound at 17 weeks, and won't have another till 36 weeks to check the position of the baby, and even that one isn't necessary because I'm having a repeat c-section.

No worries! I'm sure you are fine. A lot of mom's are having more ultrasounds due to complications.

  • Completely normal! I had my first at seven weeks to make sure it wasn't twins (I was super sick), and my last one at 21 weeks. There's one doctor nearby that does an ultrasound at every visit, high risk or not. That just seems excessive to me.
  • With my son (5 years ago), I only had 2 ultrasounds done but with this one (I'm 28 weeks along) I've gotten one done every week. I think today was my last one though. I'm sure everything is fine (:

I'm high risk due to advanced maternal age so I had 2 ultrasounds right away at 5 weeks and 7 weeks, then the mid pregnancy anatomy scan and I'll get a few more towards the end. Low risk pregnancies aren't monitored quite so much.
  • That seems to be standard! I had one at 8 weeks and one at 20 weeks. I ended up with 2 extra ones done at maternal fetal medicine because my baby has a 2 vessel cord. They initially said I'd have to have more ultrasounds all along but he growth and development are fine so maternal fetal medicine said that was needed. I just asked my midwife (because my husband wanted to know if there were any more he should go to) and she said I would only have another one if I was measuring too big or too small. So it is a good thing to only have two!!

    Same procedures for me!
  • I read you only need like 2.
Some doctors do them excessively. I have one at each appointment. I think because they have the equipment and it's very informative so they just go for it. I don't mind it.

  • Normal! I had a 12w, and two for the anatomy scan bc the baby refused to cooperate for pics. I thought that was it, but the ultrasound tech said I would have one around 32w to check the position he's in.

  • Totally normal. I'm not for unnecessary ultrasounds but i want another one so badly just to see little man. I had three with one of my pregnancies and I'm trying to remember to be happy that i don't have any little issues coming up.
  • I will have one at 30 weeks just to check size because my son was a little to big for me !
  • I didn't expect to have another one and not see him until I give birth but lucked out today at my appointment....kinda!  They had a sales rep in there with a 3-D ultrasound and they needed volunteers!  Heck ya!  Except that he was facing my back and not cooperating so no face pics.  Just got to see an arm, foot and an elbow!

  • I live in Missouri so idk if that matters but I have had a lot of ultrasounds. I have had 7 total, 3 were 3D. I don't not think is normal tho... I had 4 had a clinic at the beginning. Then 1 at my first appt at hospital, another when I found out gender, and then one at my last appt.
  • I am a high risk pregnancy (with Type 1 Diabetes) - regular ultrasounds done at 12 & 20 weeks then Level 2 ultrasounds done monthly to track all of baby's organ functions & growth - since there can be a laundry list of things to potentially go wrong.

As nice as it is to see our little bundle of joy - sometimes it creates more anxiety for me because they're checking with so much detail. (I guess ignorance is bliss sometimes) thankfully, all is going as well as it possibly could! & I have to remind myself that technology is a beautiful thing.

But to add to the "high risk" factor - I see a team of doctors (3 different: OB, MFM & endocrinologist) monthly, soon bi weekly, then weekly til we deliver -- which means I will live at the doc office / hospital. (Which gives me anxiety!)

Sending you love & wishes for a healthy & quick rest of your pregnancy!! ❤️
  • I had 3 (10 weeks, 12.5 weeks, 18 weeks), but was told that my first one was just by a nurse that likes to do ultrasounds and most of the other doctors and nurses (even at the same practice) do not do one at 10 weeks. The second one was optional as we chose to do the nuchal transluceny/trisomy screening. If you chose not to do that screening, you wouldn't have that ultrasound. 18 weeks was our anatomy scan which pretty much all women have these days. None of ours were the 3D/4D.

We did pay like $350 out of pocket for each ultrasound (we're also at a pricier hospital) so you certainly wouldn't want extra ones if money was an issue. We have "Womb with a View" clinic where women can go pay ~$100-$200 out of pocket just to see their baby, maybe get the cooler ultrasound, videos, etc. My cousin is 38 weeks and she goes there a lot. Remember that our parent's generation didn't have ultrasounds at all unless there were concerns about baby. My mom only saw 1 of her 4 daughters on an ultrasound (because she measured small)

So basically- it is normal to have 1 and the others are optional.

  • I've had 5 or so already and I'm only 30 weeks. I had one at 5 or 6 weeks, pretty much 3 days after we found out I was pregnant because I was having severe pain where I shouldn't be so they wanted to make sure I didn't have an eptopic pregnancy. Thankfully all was well. Then I had another one my first visit with the OB because they didn't get any heartbeat on the first one with my primary doctor so it made my OB nervous which made me, a FTM, nervous. Then I got in a car wreck and had another sonogram. Then we had the gender sonogram and the latest one was this past week for a blood clot in my leg. The tech was super nice and asked if I wanted to see my LO again since I had been so stressed about the blood clot this might cheer me up. It totally did! Although I'm pretty sure LO flipped me off at one point. My mom and MIL said they only had one or two so I feel very lucky to have seen my little girl several times. I wish everyone got to see their LO as often as I have but preferably under better circumstances.
  • I have one at every visit. I am considered a higher risk due to having an autoimmune disorder so they have to track her a little closer. Other than my A.S. The office u/s last like 10 seconds.
