Trouble breathing?

I often feel short of breath and I have read that pregnancy can cause this. I can be sitting down and completely calm and need to take deep breaths to catch my breath. I am a former smoker but I haven't smoked in months obviously and my lungs feel worse now than they did before! My heart also starts racing, on account of nothing. Is anyone else experiencing it? I'm not sure when to worry about it?

Re: Trouble breathing?

  • My heart will sometimes feel like it's beating out of my chest. It happens pretty regularly when I'm sitting our laying down. I read it's common, but will be asking my mid wife about it tomorrow. I'm 22 Weeks if that helps

  • Yeah i read it is all common too. I guess it is just unsettling lol
  • Yup. Happens to me. I've never smoked, but my dad did in the house and quit shortly after I left for college.

It can be normal, but my OB sent me in for an EKG yesterday, and my results just showed my typical irregular heartbeat so that didn't explain why I have a hard time doing anything. He is referring me to a cardiologist to check and see if further testing is needed.

You should contact your OB and see what he/she thinks.

  • Yes I have the same thing. For me I think it's high blood pressure. Because Ive been diagnosed with chronic/gestational high blood pressure. I'm on meds for it and I still have shortness of breath.

I could be wrong and it could just be a normal pregnancy symptom. If you're up for it, go to your local drugstore and check your BP. High BP can be VERY dangerous during pregnancy so it's worth it to check it or call your OB.

  • This happens to me too. Sometimes it's bad enough that I get dizzy and need to sit down. My BP has been normal at every check-up though. But I have been sick with something like a cold/ sinus infection for like 3 weeks, so that could be my problem..

  • I'm 20 wks, I've never smoked or anything yet I am constantly OUTTA breath! It's scary/annoying... You're not alone.
  • My BP is good, but I feel out of breath after climbing stairs. I can feel a strong pulse when I am still but it's not fast, it's just stronger due to extra blood volume
  • I haven't gone through this myself, but I have had several friends that have felt short of breath during their pregnancies. Not that they could not breathe, but more just like they could not get enough of the year that they wanted in. I hope you feel better soon!
  • I think part of it has to do with increased blood flow and your organs being shoved up and out of the way. For me, a flight of stairs that I used to run up now leaves me a bit dizzy. Yuck. It'll get better in about 4 1/2 months. :)
  • My lungs feel ok but shortness of breath, followed by fainting, has been happening to me over the last week. My doctor believes it's a vasovagal issue and probably caused by some nerve getting cramped or certain positions not sending enough oxygen to my brain.

She says it's harmless but be careful not to fall. And to keep an eye on things and if it gets worse or more frequent, schedule another appointment.

It might be something like that but i am not dealing with lung stress though.. so i'd get that checked out. Just to be safe.
  • I get SOB all the time. Sometimes not doing anything. I hate walking "down campus" at work because there are hills and I feel like I've ran a marathon by the time I get there. Also when the SOB starts if I don't sit down or stop to catch my breath I start feeling my heartbeat pound in my head. Also the pounding rapid heartbeat happens to me a lot. I especially notice it when I lay down. I just felt it was just a pregnancy thing.
