STM potty training help!

I know there is a potty training board but it doesn't seem super active plus I love hearing from this group and I am going crazy!

DS just turned 4 and has been potty trained for about 10 months. Urinating came really easily and is no problem- he has not had an accident in like 8 months, and he was doing well pooping for a while but he got constipated once a few months ago and it was very hard for him to go and now he HATES to sue the toilet to poop. He acts terrified of it, literally will stop himself from going for days, and once in a while go in a pull up at night (our pediatrician said not to push the nighttime training until daytime is running smoothly for urinating and pooping) or have an accident. So he's in a vicious cycle of making it uncomfortable to go because he is so afraid to go that he holds it for 2 or more days and so when he does go he has a stomach ache. Our pediatrician said to not put pressure on him to actually go on the toilet but to go back to basics and just make him sit there three times a day for 10 minutes each time and reward him with an m and m, sticker, etc. But he doesn't even want to sit on it- he acts so scared. We have tried talking to him calmly when it's not time to try to use the bathroom, offering rewards, positive reinforcement, etc. but nothing is working. Have any STMs had this problem? It's driving us crazy!

Re: STM potty training help!

  • Can you try a different potty? If you have a little one, try a lid on the regular toilet? Or get a different little one? Baby Bjorns are pretty inexpensive and maybe convincing him something different will help.

Did your dr ok a stool softener or something that can keep him more regular?

I would keep being super positive. Hype everything up that he does positive. Have him sit for 10 seconds. "Super!" Then go to 30. And so on.

Gooduck! Potty training can be challenging!

  • My dd is 14mo so we haven't started potty training yet. This might be silly, but did you ask him why he is so scared, or what is scary? If it's his body hurting maybe a stool softener would help, if it's something about the actual toilet, talking about the toilet or how it works, where his poo goes, etc might be helpful. Maybe just talking in general about how our bodies work and why it's important to get the yucky stuff out, would be helpful.
