2nd Trimester

Pregnancy pillow advice please!!!

veryday that clme my pain just gets worse if it isn't back pain it's my hips or my ribs and I'm finding myself not sleeping very well and just all around being very uncomfortable. I have looked at a few of the maternity pillows but they all look sp huge. When I am sleeping I like to have my space and nothing touching me or surrounding me. Any advice on a type of pillow that may work or something you ladies do? Any advice would be wonderful! ! Thanks

Re: Pregnancy pillow advice please!!!

  • My spouse purchased this pillow for me very early that is double sided. (yes they are as huge as it appears) I'm sorry I don't recall the brand but it cost nearly $100. Needless to say I used it twice. Like you I like my space and it made me too hot and certainly impossible to sleep with because it hurts my neck. It now lays in my guest bedroom. Many people swear by them, to my preference it was a waste of money.

  • I don't have a special maternity pillow, I just use two normal sized pillows we happened to have that are high and firm.

I sleep with one between my knees. I tend to move so sometimes it between both legs, and sometimes I lean forward so it's supporting the upper leg, but not on the lower leg, if that makes sense.

Sometimes I put the second pillow under my ankle so I'm supported all down my leg. sometimes I've slept with my arm draped over it, sometimes I only use one pillow.

So for me the flexibility of two pillows to shift as suits me has been good, and after pregnancy they are still just normal pillows we can use like normal. I do think them being quite firm though has been key to them not just getting crushed under me, and being supportive.

Also I don't sleep on one side all night, I generally need to switch at least a couple of times.

  • I bought one of those cheap, long body pillows from target. It worked well for me. I could put part of it between my knees and another part under the bump. Or I used it to prop myself so I couldn't roll into my back. I figured if I hated it, I would only be out $10 instead of $100.

I also have a cheap one from target. Our youngest lo still sleeps in our bed, so I'm not able to use the pillow like I'd like to. So I just use a small decorative pillow (like the one that came in our comforter set) and I just put it between my knees. It helps a lot! I'm nearing the end of my first tri and I'm already noticing a lot of pain and discomfort while laying down. The small pillow definitely does the trick when you can't or don't want a huge pillow.
  • I bought two large, firm pillows, one for behind my back and one for under my leg. Obviously this is in addition to my regular pillows that I put under my head. Never been happier. My husband bought me a body pillow early on but it really doesn't work because I need one on either side of my body, so I use it against the wall at the head of the bed.

  • I tried the snoogle and it made my back hurt more than with a regular body pillow. Returned the snoogle. I have an old, smooshy pillow that I can put behind my back for some support or under my stomach. I use the body pillow btwn legs, and sometimes around front (or back). I was at Once Upon a Child today and got a little wedge pillow for less than $10, so I will see how that goes.
  • Something between your legs will help your hips. If you don't want stuff touching you would just use one or two normal pillows. Snoogle is good now that in 3rd tri but is quite cumbersome
  • I love my snoogle, I feel like I will use it forever! Kinda giant but we have a king bed so it works
  • I bought just a body pillow to hug at night and put my leg on its perfect
  • Love my snoogle!!!

  • I bought 2 Boppy pillows. One is the bolster and it comes with a removable ice pack and the other is a wedge. I love both of them! They were between $17-$20 each and they work wonders!
  • I love my snoogle!
  • I tried using the decorative pillow and regular pillow in the first trimester - didn't work. I didn't want a huge pillow so I found this pregnancy pillow at the sleep number store. I think it was $35-$45. It's shaped like a giant kidney bean and has an indented part to put your belly. Runs chest area to thighs. Ive also used it behind me with another soft pillow propping up my belly, like sleeping on your back at an angle.
  • Snoogle!! And it has so many different purposes. It took a little getting used to but now I love it.
  • So i got the "Snoogle' from motherhood maternity. It is basically a giant pretzel that looks a bit like a large bowel.

It cradles you as you sleep. My husband calls him "The noodle" and i call him "Mario".

You basically lie on your side with your back against the inner part of the C shape. You put your head on one end, the other end i put between my knees to keep them from hurting.

The first few nights, i got pulled muscles from Mario. But once i got used to him, i now can't sleep well without him.

He's effective enough that we both refer to it as The Other Man.
  • I got a body pillow from target yesterday to help me sleep better and it worked perfectly fine last night. I didn't want to spend so much on a pillow. $9 on a body pillow plus $9 for 2 pillow covers was fine was with me and I think will work just the same.
