Any advice? Please!

So I am feeling terrible bc pedi can't even figure out what is going on with LO and she is in so much pain... Every time she eats she will only do about an ounce and begin to hysterically cry even if she has burped and continue to cry for hours. They thought gas so I changed bottles, burped more often and did gripe water...none made a difference except I do feel the gripe water may have calmed her down a little a couple times but nothing to be brag about. So then doc put her on ranitidine which she started yesterday morning at 1 ml 2x a day so she has had 4 doses so far. Although yesterday seemed like an improvement today she screamed for 3 hours straight after only being able to eat an oz at her 4 pm feeding. I am so exhausted and feel like a failure since I can't figure it out..when she eats I can hear her gulping and then can hear and feel the food actually hitting her stomach causing her stomach to gurgle.
Anyone else have any issues like this? Should I be giving ranitidine more time to work? Probiotics? Soy? Any suggestions...at this point I'm desperate!

Re: Any advice? Please!

  • Give the ranitidine time to work. I believe it can take up to 2 weeks of regular use: it sucks so bad to watch baby in pain! I'm so sorry.

  • Probiotics has helped our guy though for something else. I don't think it would hurt to try. Gut health/balance is important
  • I was going to suggest probiotics too. I keep hearing about Bio Gaia.
  • We use a probiotic for LO and I feel as though it has helped. We use BioGaia. It takes about a week to see some results, possibly less, but I find it made a difference to my LOs overall comfort. Good luck! I hope you find a solution soon >:D<

Are you formula or breast feeding? If you're formula feeding it could be the formula. If you're breast feeding it could be something that you're eating that doesn't agree with your l/o.

Edit to add: My l/o was like this when I gave her Gerber formula. I switched her to Similiac and she has been great. Good luck!
  • Are you formula feeding? It may be an allergy in what she is eating. DD had issues when she was a baby and it was heart wrenching. We ended up putting her on Nutramigen for colic with probiotics. She was like a new baby. It was expensive as hell though.

Ranitidine takes a while to work hun- with our boy it was over a week until we noticed A difference. Hang in there and it sounds like you're doing a great job. Probiotics are also a great idea

    Hi,
I am an avid lurker and haven't posted anything since the beginning of pregnancy but your story sounded so much like mine that I had to respond. My pedi tested my lo for blood in his stool which came back positive so hence he had a milk/soy allergy. She put him on similac alimentum and it made a difference. I use the rtf version because he tolerate it better than the powder form. I also breastfeed so I cut out all dairy/soy from my diet. He is much better now and added with the reflux med he is a happy baby with occasional fussing when he is tired or hungry. I hope this helps...

**I tried editing my name but having difficulty changing it****
  • Thanks so so much for all the responses ladies it makes me feel a tad bit better knowing I'm not the only one dealing with this ! My LO gets prob about 95% breastmilk through bottles (maybe even more) I only supplement with gerber gentle if I absolutely have to. For example she hasn't had any since Saturday morning and it's Wednesday now so I don't think it's the formula but maybe it's my milk...:/
Oh and the other thing is that at nighttime she is way better like it's rare if it bothers her? Isn't that strange? That why I think it's related to the gulping bc at night she doesn't do it.
Guess i will give the Zantac more time i just feel like I'm torturing her :(
  • So if I had to guess then (ps I'm not a doctor!) I would say it's your milk. Get your baby's stool tested as others have said. We too ended up on Similac Alimentun.
  • My little guy was having tons of issues with gas pains. After speaking to a lactation consultant at his pediatricians office they suggested I cut out dairy. It sucks but has made a huge difference. He still has some gas at times but is much happier overall.
  • Are you cutting out direct dairy like eating cheeses and milk etc or even bread and foods made with dairy which is basically everything processed lol ? Sorry if that is a stupid question

LO had some very green poops a few days after my milk came in, and I eat a lot of dairy, so my doctor had me cut it for two weeks and then slowly reintroduce. For the two weeks I cut everything, even with traces of dairy. It was super hard, but doable. Now I'm eating stuff with traces of dairy again, along with 1-2 servings of cheese daily and LO tolerates it fine. I haven't tried milk yet or anything like ice cream. She'd probably be fine but I'm being extra cautious.

Silk almond milk is a life saver, especially the dark chocolate version because it is near to impossible to find anything chocolate without dairy in it. I also make my morning oatmeal with the vanilla almond milk. If you live near a trader Joe's, they have really good ice cream made of coconut milk. I also got some from Walmart but the TJs version was better. Good luck!
  • TJ's chocolate chips are non dairy!
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • You guys are making me hungry and I just ate lunch. ;)
  • Thank u all for your input it means a lot ! I hope I figure this out soon otherwise I'm gunna rip my hair out!
  • I'd say it's your milk too. If LO is hurting that bad I'd cut dairy asap and see if it helps. Maybe do some reading on making the change because a lot of things have dairy in them and we don't realize it. I hope it gets straightened out soon!

It is really really rare for breastmilk to cause the problems you are having.. No matter how much formula I would say it's that... Breastmilk is so easily digested, and natural..babies rarely have problems.. They even think "dairy causing problems" is a long shot, if a baby is exclusively breastfed there is a great chance there won't be any major gastric problems no matter what your diet.. (Keep in mind all babies will be fussy, have some gas and some spit up no matter what) Even a little bit of formula could def be the problem. I think we as moms are so concerned with our Los the first spit up, or struggle with gas episode we think there is something wrong and want to fix it. Your situation does not seem like this and I'm downplaying it all.. I'm talking in general. It does seem there is def something going on and it must be heartbreaking.. Anyway you can cut out formula and exclusively give breast milk ? It could fix the problem.. Good luck

    This worked for me too!

My lo had some gas issues and is breastfed we put her on hmf b for breastfed babies per or peds advice took 2 weeks but she does so much better now. The reason she put us on probiotics is because my water was broke for over 24 hours and they put me on antibiotics for infections. So we need the probiotics to get the healthy bacteria back in there. Not sure this is the case for you but hopefully it helps!
  • I had problems too -- eliminated all dairy and then all soy, started nizanidine (acid reducer) and she's great now.

Give the meds time to work, keep her upright after feedings or supervised on her tummy, and do small frequent feedings. Maybe just 1 oz at a time.

I second the almond milk with oatmeal! I add applesauce and cinnamon and it's like apple pie. Does Trader Joe's have a non dairy Greek yogurt substitute? I tried Silk. It's weird.
