How does stress really affect the baby?

I'm 15 weeks and I'm going through so much stress right now, far too many things for me to deal with in one go, let alone being pregnant on top of it!! I have been extra stressed today and have cried a lot, and the last couple of hours I have been having pains in my stomach ..could the stress be causing problems with the baby? I know that stress doesn't help during pregnancy, but I don't actually know how much it affects it. Thankyou in advance!

  • Hi there, big hugs to you! I know how hard things can get in life, let alone with the added hormones and emotions that come with pregnancy.
Try not to be hard on yourself, you're obviously going through a lot right now. My midwife said that stress and anxiety for short periods-up to a month or so, her words- would not harm the baby, as it's very well protected.
If you are concerned at all speak to your midwife or doctor to put your mind at ease.
Hope this helps in some way xxxx

  • Thankyou very much ☺️ I really appreciate your thoughtful advice. I have an appointment with my midwife next week so I think I will bring it up to her then. It is very difficult to keep everything held together though, and then worrying if I can actually provide my baby with anything but stress and problems. Thankyou xxx
  • Always here if you need to get anything off your chest, or for a rant or support ;-)!!
I've found The Bump incredibly helpful, and it's really nice to feel part of a community.
Much love to you xxxxxxx All the way from cornwall (pasty land ;-) ) xxxxxx
  • Jodie I've been craving rowes Cornish pasties!!! I'm Cornish living in Australia. From Truro :)
Also @charcharx I know it's very hard to be stressed whilst pregnant. It won't harm the baby but it's best to maybe go to the doctors so that they can keep an eye on your blood pressure and mental health.
I've been going through a lot too so I went to the doctors and they sent me to a psychiatrist every week. The midwives are also really helpful and they are offering more and more help every day and also offered this meditation program to help me destress a little bit.
So to maybe keep your mind at ease head to the doctors or midwife as it's always helpful for them to know what your going through to get you going in the right direction. :)
I hope everything works out for you soon x
  • Thankyou all so much ☺️ your comments are really appreciated and make me feel more at ease ☺️ xx

And to you charchax, it's good to hear a friendly ear has helped you to relax a bit. Definitely speak to gp or midwife though, they can offer so much help and advice. Xxxxxxxxxxxx
  • If you're having a hard time holding it together then give your MW a call now. She's there to support you and you aren't looking for attention or anything. It sounds like you need her.

  • I was concerned about the same thing because of some life changing events I experienced recently. what I have read is that normal amounts of stress is fine but constant stress may have developmental affects on baby.

I read that stress doesn't impact the baby, unless you are letting it impact your own health (not eating, etc.) When the midwives though I lost LO, the ultrasound tech said, "It's funny. All of this stress and anxiety out here and the baby has no idea what you went through over it. It's just in there happy as a clam!"
