April 2016 Moms

INTRO. Ah! (aaaand a little question for teachers)

Hiii!

Just got our BFP today for babes #2. We have a daughter who is 3 y 9 m. and three sweet doggies. Due date is estimated for April 12. Ah!

I'm an elementary teacher and am nervous about how it all works with taking time off and/or if this is terrible timing or super great timing!? Any other teachers out there with experience with an April baby and taking work off.

Again cheers to you all and congratulations!!!!

  • Welcome aboard.

I had the opposite problem when my daughter was born (9/20), and ended taking off through the end of winter vacation with her.

An April baby seems to be asking for Mama to take off through the rest of the school year (and the summer obviously) if you're able to swing it.

Thank you! That's what I'm hoping for in the long run. Definitely wouldn't mind an extended summer full of baby snuggles. ☺️
  • Yes, I plan to take off for the last part of the year. I was hoping for a march or April baby for the most time to spend bonding through the summer!
  • I'm a teacher and pregnant with my first, EDD April 10. I always said, If I could plan it, I wanted to be due around then so I could take off around Easter break, and stay off through the summer! I think it's better to end the year being out, not at the start the school year. As long as taking the time off works for you, I think it's great timing!
  • This was my ideal timing.  DD was born in June and I went back in September (exactly 12 weeks) and it wasn't enough for me.  I know this is personal and varies from woman to woman and know plenty of moms that return to work at 12 weeks or sooner, but I need more time.  She was still waking sometimes 2x per night.  April will be good I think.  I work at a charter school and get paid year round but it will be decreased due to being out.  I think if I return before the end of the year I get my full pay all summer so I may return for the last week or so (but I need to figure all that out still).
  • Congrats and welcome! I think April is a great month for teachers, or anyone for that matter! My due date is April 4th but in NY my school goes until the end of June so I will definitely run out of time but its ok since I plan on taking the following year as well. In hindsight its not the best timing since the Common Core Tests begin April 5th I believe and then the following week. The poor sub will have to start their placement with that nonsense! Oh well nothing I can do about it but make sure they are prepared.

My advice is once you are feeling comfortable talk to your HR person and they will give you exact dates of how long you will be covered, insurance, pay, etc.

    Good luck!

  • I am an elementary teacher as well and so excited to be having an April baby. This way I will have the extra summer months getting to spend time with my baby. I am also thinking about taking off Sept and October of the next school year but have to work everything out before I make that decision. As far as telling my principles I will probably let them know at the end of September early October.

    Congrats! So exciting!

I'm a teacher too and looking forward to spring/summer baby! Had a summer baby last time and it fall came around so quickly so we didn't spend a lot of time outside.

  • Also a teacher and my first was a may baby and that was great. I'm excited for an April baby to spend as much time as possible before school starts back up again. Def good timing. My husband is going to see if he can split his 2 weeks paternity and take some in June in case I run out of days and have to go back at the end. I'm psyched and praying for lots of snow this year too lol, would love to get in a few bonus days with DD before number two arrives!
  • Oh my goodness, teachers unite! Thank you so so so much for your advice and experience. This is seriously such a relief and now I am able to rest a little easier knowing all of your experience and positive thoughts about it, congratulations to each of you! Excited to join the April Mommy club! ☺️☺️☺️

  • I am excited about the timing. Baby is due at the beginning of April and I will take the rest of the school year off. So excited for a 4.5 month break with baby!
  • I'm a teacher as well! I'm totally looking forward to taking off the rest of the year once his baby pops out!

I only took about four weeks with baby 1 who was born July 18, and it was so sad. I was going to a new campus and felt I NEEDED to be there, and in retrospect, I should have just taken the time!!

  • Thank you both! I am getting more relaxed and finding excitement in hearing all of your experiences. Thank you thank you! It'll be nice to beat the heat of the summer being at the end of being pregnant!
  • Ahh. Totally missed this earlier! Oh yeah. Definitely don't feel bad about taking off work. Get those baby snuggles!!!
  • Hey! I teach and we purposefully planned it to fall in April. It's perfect for a 6-8 week leave and then come back for the last couple of days. :)

  • I'm probably going to have to go back fora few weeks. I can only take 6-8 weeks off.
