Funny smelling neck?

Hi all! FTM and exclusively breastfeeding..and my LO has a very funky smelling neck! We clean it really well at bath time (twice a week) and there is usually white gunk stuff in there....but the next morning after bath it is back. I originally thought it was from milk running down her cheeck into er neck while breastfeeding but I just googled it and I read it may be a fungal infection. Anyone else experience this? What do you do to prevent it?

Re: Funny smelling neck?

  • Maybe? Though it was just baby funk as we don't find much time to bathe him. Yep, we can often only find time to wash one of our kids. Lovely. We wipe it out 2x a day and started using Honest healing blame in the crevice once it was clean. Started this 3 weeks ago and we stopped getting the white gunk. So maybe it was something more than baby funk? Either way the healing balm seems to get rid of it quickly. He does smell better.

  • My babies get that from spit up, milk dripping, and sweat. I wash them in water a couple times a week and then wash with soap twice as well. Today I used light amounts of baby powder (save the flaming please lol) just to dry it out and freshen it up!
  • Ah yes, the neck cheese. I battle it but it always wins...

  • I noticed this too. I attributed it to milk and sweat getting trapped in those baby fat folds. I bathe him every night to combat this. I thought daily bathing might be too much but that's what my pediatrician recommended and it's gotten rid of it. Also his acne cleared up and his cradle cap is almost completely gone.
  • Mine has it too. The skin looks almost chapped. I try to wash it with a really soft wash cloth every day and then make sure it's dry. I put aquaphor healing ointment on it, but I may try the Honest Company healing balm.
  • If it looks red and chapped it might be fungal. Otherwise it's just normal baby funk. Clean it out and keep it dry as much as possible.

Honest balm is amazing. Between drool and freezing winters DS1's face was a mess his first winter and it would clear it over night. LO's neck was red and it cleared that too. No comparison to the other things we've tried. We have a backup stash!
