Twins 4 weeks

My twins are a month old tomorrow and do not sleep well at all. I'm probably averaging 4 hours of sleep day. They are constantly hungry and I'm breastfeeding. We have started supplementing formula because I honestly cannot keep up. I need rest so my husband feeds them in the evenings. We just started the formula today but they still only slept a few hours this evening. They have not slept through the night yet at all. Is this normal? I feed them both on demand and try to keep on the same schedule. It's difficult because they don't always sleep at the same time. any advice ?

Re: Twins 4 weeks

  • I don't have twins but I think it's very normal for month old babies not to sleep through the night. Not to scare you but my DS started sleeping through the night shortly before he turned 2 and DD was about the 18 months. Those wake ups for quick comfort once a night were much different than young babies' much higher needs though.

First off, kudos to you for handling newborn twins, that is amazing and difficult and it sounds like you and your DH are doing a great job. Breastfeeding them even a little is great and having your DH feed them in the evenings is a good idea so you can get some rest.

It does get easier eventually, hang in there.

  • Definitely normal for them to not be sleeping through the night yet. DS1 didn't do that until 9-10 months old. I know several people with twins and most of them have said when one wakes to feed, wake the other so they feed at the same time and you can work on getting them to sleep at the same time. It doesn't always work well but it might help get them on a schedule as they get older.

  • My twins are 3 weeks old and they don't sleep through the night. I wouldn't expect them too yet. My DS didn't sleep through the night until at least 6 weeks. The longest stretch I have gotten so far has been 5 hiurs

  • Good job momma! I'm sure being a twin mom is so hard!! I know you're exhausted, because just having 1 is exhausting. Sounds like you are doing awesome though! 4 weeks would be super super early for a baby to start sleeping through the night. I've heard of some babies starting at 6-8 weeks, but for most it takes several months or even a year or more. Don't be discouraged! Just rest when/if you can, keep letting your hubs help (or anyone else who is willing!), and keep your chin up! You will figure out your groove =D>
