FTM and 3 month old and hard poops. Please help

Okay so this is going to be long but I seriously have no idea what to do.

My baby is 3 months old now and My milk dried up about 5 weeks ago and I had to start my baby on formula. So at first I would nurse her for as long as she could get any out and then supplement her with formula. I used the parents choice gentle kind. Her poops were fine then except for a change in color but once I dried totally up and all she was getting was formula she started having really solid poops and she would cry when she went potty. So I took her to the doctor and he told me to give her two ounces of prune juice once a day for a week and slowly ween her off of it. Well it's now the second week and I've been weening her off and I was giving her an ounce a day and then I went to a half an ounce a day. And yesterday she pooped and I noticed part of it was solid again. The first part of solid and then the last part is soft. I called her doctor and he said maybe she needs a little longer on the prune juice. But I'm worried her body will start to depend on the juice and that she's been on the juice for so long already. I don't know what else to do. And I don't understand why the first part is so hard and the lasts part is soft. I asked about switching formulas he said I could try but that most formulas have the some ingredient so he doesn't know if that'll make a difference. I'm so lost and just want to help my baby. Please help :/

Re: FTM and 3 month old and hard poops. Please help

  • I give my daughter probiotic drops once a day in her morning bottle- they have helped tremendously!!

  • I had my daughter on Target brand advanced (compared to Similac advanced) and switched to sensitive (compared to Similac Sensitive) and she got hard poops too. My doc said pear juice but I thought the same as you after a while and didn't want her to depend on it. I noticed that as she was starting to eat more her poop seemed to be getting harder so I decided to switch her back to the Advanced and now her poop has returned to normal and the gas never returned either. Hope that helps :)
  • I used the parents choice brand at first too but my LO had hard poops and tummy troubles from it too. So I switched to the similac soy that I used with my first and he has been fine since.
  • The hard stools are because her little digestive system is adjusting to the formula, it's totally normal. If she is doing ok on the formula aside from the hard stool I would advise you not to switch formula as it will only make her constipated again (been there with my boy). Also instead of prune juice give her 2 ounces of cooled boiled water every day until her dirty nappies are normal again. Good luck!
  • My daughter would cry for hours before she could poop when I had her on Similac Advance, including the target Up & Up version, and Parents Choice Gentle formula. Nothing helped until I switched to Dr Browns bottles and Enfamil Reguline. Now she goes easily and it doesn't bother her at all! I'm not sure if it was the bottles or the formula, but now that she's doing so well, I don't want to change anything!
  • When we went thru this my doctor said we could try chamomile tea. You brew like normal and I gave my son an ounce a day. We also switched to similac sensitive formula
  • Probiotics have saved my little who has had horrible tummy issues. We use the gerber soothe formula which has them in it and rice cereal with probiotics ... Also give her some water.. Maybe 1/2 oz at a time in between feedings... I was scared to give my little water but as long as your not cutting back on feedings because of water consumption your fine
