Extra Ultrasound- Fundal Height

Today at my 36 week appt the doc said she is sending me for another ultrasound because the baby is measuring a bit small (32 cm fundal height for my past 2 visits). She says things feel good from feeling my belly and the baby but that's why they measure, so they can just do follow-up checks to be sure. I know fundal height can vary for different reasons- I'm tall with a long torso and heard that can play a role, but it doesn't seem good to me that it's stayed the same, whatever it is. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? They are scheduling the ultrasound now and I feel like I'll go nuts waiting.

Yes this happened to me with my first ands I'm waiting for the ultrasound orders for this one. I'm also taller, long torso and carry small. I had an ultrasound last time at 34 weeks. He was 5lbs at the time and born 9 days early at 8lbs 12oz. My Dr mentioned last appointment that I was measuring small but she figured I was fine. If I see another dr at my appointment next week I'm guessing they wok order one. I wouldn't worry. Just one of the joys of having a long torso ;)

  • I had to get extra sonograms with my first because they said my fundal height wasn't high enough. I am only 5ft tall and I have a petite frame with a short torso. I kept on saying he just didn't have room and they said my stomach would stretch. Turns out I had a full size baby in a smaller uterus. It was just wasn't big enough him! I went 3 days over my due date and he was 7lbs 10oz. I hope that all is well. It's good they are checking it though.

It's good they're checking. I know someone whose fundal height didn't change from weeks 34 to 38, it was a sign of IUGR. They did an ultrasound and decided to induce because baby was small, he's doing great now!

  • My fundal height has consistently been measuring 2cm high but every time they've sent me for an u/s to check all the measurements have been totally normal for gestational age. I know it's not the same but I imagine it isn't unheard of for fundal measurements to just be off.

  • This just happened to me! They did the ultrasound because they were worried baby was small. Turns out she's anything but...60th percentile! The culprit ended up being semi low fluid. I upped my water intake big time and started resting more and got it up to a normal level over the weekend. Good luck!
  • Thanks guys!!! Must..chill..out. :)
  • This happened to us yesterday, my first baby measured small fundal height at 36 weeks and was born 9 days early at 6lb 9oz. So i knew this was coming. Im 34 weeks and fundal height qas in 10th percentile, we had the scan yesterday, waiting to hear from Dr. I'm tallish with long torso and guess we just happen to make small babies!
  • This happened to me the last two - 2 week appointments - I have been measuring 2 weeks ahead and now that its the second time they are sending me for another ultrasound in a week and a half to check on fluid and to see where baby is measuring at. There could be a lot of reasons but better to check than not... I am almost hoping (now as I am getting more uncomfortable - 35 weeks) they are right with me being two weeks earlier and maybe we can see our little man sooner BUT ONLY if he is fully baked :)
  • I have the same problem I have been consistently measuring ten cm behind in fundal height. But little one is always in the 50th percentile so there is zero worry from the doctors. They assume it's just a combination of this being my first baby and having really strong ab muscles.
  • I'm only measuring two cm behind but I have an ultrasound Friday to see the same thing. I'm told it's usually nothing and either you have a long torso, tight abs or maybe you just carry small. Good luck!
