Just Another FTM Labor Fear!

So, ever since my due date on 8/1 I have started getting nervous in the afternoon/evening that I'm going to go into labor and be up all night. I'm scared because I feel SO TIRED and I can't imagine facing labor this exhausted. Can someone please give me some rainbows and butterflies and tell me that everything will be ok?

  • Yes/ no I got the Epi so I wasn't tired all day. But between no food and being up all day....i was pretty exhausted when it was time to push after 19 hours....

Umm...can't touch the tired thing with rainbows and butterflies, but I can tell you that at the end you will have a beautiful little baby to hold and stare at and you won't give a damn how tired you are. And adreneline is a powerful thing!

Lol, this. I am sorry to tell you that laboring overnight SUCKS for that very reason. But at least you thought of it - I didn't my first time around ;). My advice is even though you want to stare at that baby and take visitors and whatnot, try hard to get some sleep at the hospital. You truly do feel like you're starting off 5 steps back.

  • No advice but there is a light at the end of the tunnel :)
  • I went into labor when my water broke at 2 am. IMO it was actually a good thing bc 1) I was terrified I would go into labor in the middle of the day and get stuck in traffic (hospital is in a part of town that has horrible traffic). And 2) as PP's have said, if you are OK with meds or planning to get an epi, the nurses and docs will try to help you sleep. I had a C section but had to labor some first and the contractions made me super nauseous. They gave me some meds to help and let me sleep for a couple hours first.
  • Thanks mamas. Hearing that it's going to suck if it happens actually helps because I can mentally prepare, rather than hope I get a magical burst of energy!
  • Adrenaline is a powerful thing. Your body just kind of takes over. You'll be okay :) And there is no nap like the first nap after having a baby...amazing! Until that damn "uterine massage" gets in the way ;)
  • I have good news and bad news for you. I will tell you the bad news first. No matter what the time of day your labor begins, there is always the possibility that you may have to labor throughout the night. It just depends on how long it lasts.

The good news is that if you get an epidural, you may actually be able to relax while you are dilating until it is time to push. (I actually fell asleep at 9 cm dilated.) Also, your adrenaline will be pumping. You will definitely have energy even if you were exhausted.

You will be fine and your body can do amazing things so try not to get worked up worrying. :)
  • Lurking from the Sept board. I went into labor, with my last little guy, in the middle of the night. I had gone to bed before my kids had even gone to bed, around 7pm. Very unlike me as I'm a night owl! Woke up around 1am to vacuum, do dishes and told hubby to scoop litter... Contractions hit and a few hours later my baby was born. I didn't know it was labor. I just was exhausted and went to bed super early and it was a good thing, too!

Your body will hopefully give you a rest beforehand. Either way you will probably have a burst of adrenaline at some point during labor and then most definitely after birth.

  • I have the same worry, especially since I am planning a home birth, so there will be no epidural. I'm just trying to sleep as much as I can before hand. You never know when it might start or how long it might last. Sleep now.
  • In the big picture, consider this: if all we experienced was labor and delivery I'd have 10 kids. I really think Its the easier part. Its pregnancy that I have to come to terms with going through again as a necessary evil to getting another beautiful baby.
Also, there is a big change in your hormones after delivery that I swear gives you extra energy for a couple weeks of not much sleep. With DS and DD I don't remember feeling super exhausted until at least 2 weeks later and I wasn't sleeping at all in the last few weeks of pregnancy with DS.
