Core exercise after c section?

i am going back to personal training 10 weeks postpartum after a c section. I still feel like I am weak in my core around my incision so I want to be really careful. My core in general is weak because during my pregnancy I stayed away from core training and opted for more walking.

For those of you getting back to exercise after a c section, what are you doing to work out? What are you avoiding? Anyone else feel that weakness in the abs near the incision? Are you doing core workouts?

I so want a strong core back but I want to be smart about easing back into it!

Re: Core exercise after c section?

  • Great thread! I look forward to reading what others have been doing. I'm 9 weeks post op.

I did yoga all throughout my pregnancy (modifying to avoid an work, twists, etc...) so I'm trying to get back into it now.

I've been doing plank pose and boat pose to really focus on core strength as well as heel slides and bicycle legs while on my back. I'm not doing any crunches or anything like that, but I really can't wait to get my core back!
  • Loading the player...
  • I was told to focus on exercises that focus on drawing abs in, like planks and anything that requires core stability. If you start with crunches too soon, they can actually do damage. Your trainer should be able to research this for you.
  • Check out Fitness Blender and search for their post pregnancy video.
  • My OB said to avoid anything involving weights and my core, so I've been doing planks. I told him I wanted to get back to doing a full burpee this week and he basically told me to keep dreaming big.
I'm going to stick with keeping things pretty easy. Maybe start some yoga.
  • I'm 8 weeks post op and yes, still feeling sore around incision. I've started doing yoga during baby's naps, light vinyasa. Not able to go deep into a lot of poses so just doing what I can. I did start feeling pain like around my left ovary area so don't know if I overdid it.
  • I'm so glad I'm not the only one still sensitive at the Incision site. I've been attempting yoga but I can't lay flat on my stomach. Perhaps bc I still look 6 months pregnant? Ugghhh

But I've been doing the daily burn and I went back to basics with their true beginner workout program. They have a core series and I'm slowing building it back up.
  • I was high risk, so I stayed away from exercise beyond my job as a preschool teacher and walking the dog. Before baby I was a p90x fanatic and loved it...could rave about it all day! (Have p90, p90x, and p90x3) I don't think I will be able to dive right back into it post csection so perhaps I will start things out a little lighter, or do an adapted version of p90x...like half the reps, or easy on some of the moves. Swimming is always a good low impact exercise option, but it will be the end of the warm season by the time I can work out so we will see. I would start low impact and work up to solid core stuff as you begin to feel more and more physically able...ease into it...it's not a race ;) happy fitness thoughts to you all!
