Developmental Questions 8/2-8/9

Hopefully this thread isn't overkill, but it seems like some questions aren't necessarily specific to feeding, sleeping or medical symptoms. Maybe we can gather questions and comments about our LO's development, leap changes, etc. here!

My question is that this past week (8 weeks) LO shoves her hands into her mouth all the time! It drives me nuts. Is this just part of her discovering her hands? It happens when she's content, hungry, angry - it doesn't seem to matter. My only concern is that I don't really want her to be a big finger sucker like I was growing up. But I also don't want to shove a pacifier into her mouth all day long. Any tips? Is this just a phase?

  • Mine too, and ditto on the paci vs. hands dilemma! No resolution to offer, just, "Yup, us too."
  • Ours started this two around 8 weeks too! Funny how this is a "thing". I also read in one of the weekly updates on thebump this is something they do now.
  • @dancegurl1118 Giggles!? I'm sooo jealous! Sometimes I feel like my LO is about to bust out laughing and I can't wait :)
  • My LO has his fists constantly near his mouth.. Can hear him licking them .. Trying to suck on them.. It drives me nuts! At least find your thumb kid!! Lol ..and no he won't take a paci.. But he will spend all night licking and trying to suck ...but he just wants to be a little bird and peck at them all night.. Haha
  • @swaugh14 the giggles just started at 8 weeks. They're at nothing in particular so they have no meaning but they're still so dang cute.

  • Jealous of you girls getting giggles and laughs! LO is almost 11 weeks and I get plenty of smiles but no laughs. It's still an improvement over the constant crying I used to get, but I'm so eager for that first laugh!

    Pregnancy Ticker

  • Every time after he's going to sleep now, LO takes his hands and tucks them under his chin. Not sure if he's "discovering" them, but it looks so cute!
  • @henrytviii I'm the same way. It's hard to not compare. I have the opposite issue in regards to size though, my LO is teeny. Grow baby!!!
  • @henrytviii you have the perfect attitude. You can drive yourself crazy with all this stuff. I try not to even look at the "guidelines" because some things develop faster than others. Sounds like your chunker is doing fine :)

  • LO will be 8 weeks on Friday and she woke up this morning with both of her hands wet with slobber.
  • Mine started sucking in her hands and arms right before 7 weeks. At the same time she really started smiling and cooing/shrieking followed by a giggle. It makes me laugh and now I feel like I can talk with her instead of at her.
Side note, she now enjoys being in her mommaroo and bouncer. I had to rove the newborn insert and adjust the angle of the seat for her to enjoy the mommaroo. Yay! She talks the most while looking at the mobile in the swing and after her 5am feeding. Just go back to sleep l/o!!!!!
  • My LO has been hand sucking as a hunger sign since like, week 2, and within the last week or so has been punching himself in the face often and flailing his limbs. He's 5.5 weeks. I will say that he seems much less interested in sucking on them when he's wearing his scratch mitts, which is often-he has always wanted a hand near his face since birth, and tends to do a number on himself with his nails. He still puts his hands in his mouth, but won't suck because the cloth is there. Maybe something to consider for those of you who don't want your LO in the habit of hand sucking?

Hmmm... I worry that LO will scream bloody murder if I put mittens on her hands... But I'm sick of her scratched up face every day! Even though I clip her talons frequently.

For me what's tough is that fingers in her mouth is her feeding cue... And now I wonder if it's no longer just a feeding cue. DH jams a bottle in her mouth every time it happens and I hope we aren't misreading her.
