STM buying baby gear

As a STM I don't plan on buying a crap ton. My son I had a swing, a bouncer, a play pen, a crib, a bassinet, a high chair, a stroller, a jumping play set, and a walker..

I don't have any baby gear left. I didn't plan on another. Then we changed our minds three years later.

This time around I'm purchasing a breast pump, diaper bag, stroller/car seat combo and the crib.
If I need a high chair I'll get it when baby is older.
I dont see the point in so much, when I know how fast they grow out of things, or how often I'd actually use it all.

My best friend is having her first and she's going crazy with baby gear..
Even though I'm a STM and know what I'll need, I feel like I'm slacking by only wanting a few things...

Any STMs not buying a ton this time?

I am expecting my third and I seriously just want to buy some burp cloths and a few onsies! But really I will probably buy a stroller (I want the Britax b agile), a rock n play, the high chair around 6 months, and I want to get a swing second hand. I still have a crib in the attic and will get it down when baby is a few months old, i have an ergo and I have a lot of cloth diapers and plan to get a few new covers and prefolds. But I really don't plan to buy a lot of stuff!
  • I think it's BECAUSE you're a STM that you're not buying a lot.  FTMs usually think they need EVERYTHING (I was guilty of this) and don't realize that they won't use a lot of the stuff they get.

  • That would be me! I scored at two yard sales this weekend and pretty much picked up most of what we need (that I had given away after the first child - I did keep some things) for $100. The stuff was so clean at these sales, organized, and priced to give away. I'm still giddy. All I really need now are some gender neutral sleepers and a few supplies, and I'm all set. Score! I love yard sales.

  • Yep, I'm buying very little gear. I also have a ton of boy clothes saved and this one is also a boy.

I have been looking at and will be buying a few cute outfits that are new. Maybe a new blanket. But that's it. It feels great to save so much but also like I'm not really preparing.
  • I'm a FTM and I'm seriously not into all the "stuff". I'm also 33 and having a baby after a lot of my friends, so I feel like I have the benefit of seeing what others have needed / not needed. I'm trying to simplify. I'm definitely not someone who wants all the fancy new gadgets etc.

I also appreciate hearing from all you ladies what has been helpful and what has not. It's helped me with a lot of things!

  • Well I prob don't count bc DD is only 13m so
I have everything from her. But I want a double stroller, that's prob it.
  • DD is 4 and we have all the big stuff left from her. She's also old enough where we hopefully won't need a double stroller. If it's a boy I'm hoping to get almost all my clothes from family and friends. Hopefully we'll just need to buy diapers and other odd and ends.

When I was a FTM, I didn't buy any gear until after my shower. I bought a few onesies here and there, but I was waiting to see if anything was gifted at my shower. Anything that wasn't, I purchased around 32-36 weeks.
ETA, since I realized I didn't answer your question. We still have all of our big gear from DD, but I did buy a bouncer off of buy/sell/trade page. I still need to get a jumparoo or exersaucer, since I borrowed one from a friend.

  • I am a STM but my LO is only 16 months so I have everything from him. The only big gear I need is a crib (he is still in his) and I bought a double stroller because he is so little. I didn't have a ton of things for DS but what I did I used and will use again for DD

Ugh yes +1 for a crib, probably a convertible crib.

  • We have everything from DS. So the only "gear" we are really buying this time is another convertible crib (DS is still in his crib and it converts to a toddler and double bed...this baby is getting the exact same bed) and a BOB double jogging stroller.

I've purchased more cloth diapers to make sure our stash is big enough for two in diapers, and some new swaddles because I love swaddle blankets. And I want to get a woven wrap. But otherwise we're pretty set.

  • While the halo bassinet looks awesome I don't want the baby in our room at all but one month max and then right in the crib.
  • With our second I think the only thing we bought was a double stroller.

With this one, we are going to need a new crib, a new car seat, possibly a new chair for the nursery and I'm debating about mamaroo and a new diaper bag.

  • Because my little guy is only 14 months are baby gear is still up to date and I got WAY too much stuff for him anyway.
I was mad at myself for buying so many clothes for him but luckily I'm having another boy so he can wear all the cute outfits baby #1 barely wore.
  • Ugh, I need to get a double stroller.

DS is 2.5 and I mostly have everything still. I did just buy a BJ City Select because I still think at 3 it will be helpful to have a double for outings but I can use it now as well. I'll be buying a new high chair, looking at probably the counter or table attach type as I just moved into a condo and really don't have the room for the big high chair so left that at his fathers. The only other gear I'm looking at is a mamaroo or the new bouncer they just put out as I don't have a bouncer any more as those where given to friends. Besides that I'm set with the exception of clothes, especially if this one is a girl.

My soN is 3 & turns 4 in February.. I very rarely use a stroller for him, but I've been thinking with two kiddos maybe getting a double stroller?? If my son happens to run off while we are out in about I don't want to have to chase him with a stroller, right? Would anyone recommend a double stroller for a toddler and a baby? Other than that I just plan on buying a car seat (obviously) & maybe a bouncer or a swing because my son loved his. The only thing I have left from my son is his crib and dresser so luckily we won't have to buy that. I plan on buying a high chair when we need it.. but there's no point in having a high chair sit there for 6 months.. I was lucky with my son and got way more than I even thought I needed (& i didn't even need it all) at my baby shower & then gave stuff away to friends who were in need as my son grew out of it.. I wish I would have kept some stuff but honestly all we really need is a crib, car seat & high chair eventually.
  • I was considering a BOB double but it was really just for the beach or trail walking as not really running anymore. My brother is giving me his city mini double but I really want the GT version as it has better tires. So I was thinking I'd prob sell his to someone on a local moms group and then use the $$ towards the City Mini GT double. (He is fine with this) I love the single that I have now and I think tandem strollers are weird. But that's just me. Also the city mini seats can recline almost flat so fine for a toddler and an infant with no infant carrier even. I live in NY so I won't be strolling until April at the earliest so I think it will work best for me.
  • Third baby.

I'm hardly getting anything, despite donating literally everything after my last.

So far, I've purchased a wrap and new SSC carrier. The remainder of my list is small... a pack of swaddlers, new carseats for my older kids so I can fit three across, some newborn clothes and a swing. I'll probably buy another nursing pillow, (because WestCoastBaby makes the best nursing pillows ever, and I gave mine away) and some new nursing bras/tanks.

I should add that as a FTM, I bought all.the.things. I did a huge purge before I had my second and donated everything but what I actually used.

I'm in the same boat! But dd is still using some things so I'm finding we have to buy doubles of some things. We bought a car seat (dd's was in a car accident so we no longer have it.), and a double stroller, we also will buy another crib, & diaper genie. We'll need to buy big girl things for dd too, like a dresser because new baby will get the changing table w/ dresser, and we'll buy a booster seat for dd because baby will get the high chair, etc...
  • After having my son, almost 4, and niece, just turned 3 last year, I really recommend the sit and stand strollers. We used a double when my other nieces were little, and they are much heavier/harder to navigate, and sometimes a toddler will stand up to ride when they won't stay in the seat!

@laineylove78 you can switch out the wheels and just buy the GT wheels if that is the only difference that you want. I'm part of a stroller FB group and women are doing this all the time.

Whaaaaattttt!!??? Is this real? I have to look into that and the other differences, what a genius idea!

  • Similar situation in that we had gotten rid of everything. I still am rebuying a lot of the larger gear as we really used it with my son. Big difference this time around is that I'm buying almost everything secondhand even though we could afford new. I just realize how short a period of time things are useful for and Think about how good of condition things were when we got rid of them. I'm not having a shower this time so I'm taking advantage of deals as I find them.
